Activities Zone representative to Union Executive.
Only members of Activities Zone can vote for this position.
Candidates
Hey! I’m Jim, the Treasurer of Men’s Cricket and also one of your Sports Rep’s.
This is what I will bring to the role:
- This year I have been a Sports Rep working with the Sports Officer to represent TeamUCL members and pioneer change.
- As the Treasurer of UCL Cricket, I have gained a deep knowledge of Union systems and have been responsible for organisation and fundraising and sponsorship.
- I have extensive experience in leadership positions, sitting on the Sports Representative Group, Activities Zone and chairing the Sports Night Working Group. I have also been a key committee member Cricket.
Participation: Ensuring that sport is available for everyone, with support for clubs to create structured and accessible beginner programmes.
Marketing: A lot of the amazing achievements of our clubs aren't celebrated. I would work with existing student media and the SU to improve coverage of what our clubs are doing and also generate exposure for small clubs.
One TeamUCL: Bridge the disconnect between TeamUCL and RUMS to boost UCL’s overall sporting presence. Continuing the development of UCL Leagues and Project Active.
Efficiency: Simplifying union processes to make running clubs easier.
Sport has defined my university experience, and I want to help enhance the experiences of everyone involved in TeamUCL. My passion, combined with my prior experience, makes me highly suited for this role. I am deeply committed to driving positive change, improving access, and increasing enjoyment. Every student deserves the same opportunity to thrive that I have been afforded. I will work to break down barriers and create more inclusive opportunities so that all students, regardless of background or ability, can engage in sport and feel part of a strong, supportive community.
My ambition is help our societies become the leading source of social, cultural and hobby-oriented life at UCL that they are destined to be.
In particular, I aim to push changes that allow societies to become ever more inclusive. This includes:
- Encouraging UCL East and School of Management Events, by setting up a separate What’s On calendar for those campuses, and helping promote those events in communal spaces.
- Co-operating with network leaders to help societies better accommodate their communities.
- Facilitating easy collaboration between societies, and between societies, clubs and networks.
I am currently serving as Treasurer for a hobby-based society, and have taken on many tasks in a small committee, which has built both my experience as a leader and a team player.
I have maintained several full-time jobs in the past, and have experience of studying while working, splitting responsibilities while managing time effectively.
I empathize with the experience of society members, having been a member of a broad range of societies.
Furthermore, as a mature and neurodivergent student I understand the importance of representing the concerns of minority and disadvantaged students.
Students should vote for someone who takes their leadership responsibilities seriously, who endeavors to deliver on whatever mandate they are given.
They should vote for someone who cares about making our societies the best they can be for all our students, of all cultures, genders and ages, whether they be attending Bloomsbury, UCL East or Canary Wharf, undergrad or postgrad, commuting or living on-site and studying part-time or full-time.
They should vote for someone who knows and understands societies and will work tirelessly to make them even better.
If re-elected as Media Rep, I will ensure the following policies are delivered. Many build on my work from last year and aim to enhance the visibility and support of student media at UCL.
- Increased funding for printing services through clear access routes for all student publications
- Masterclasses on writing successful Student Publication Award nominations
- External speaker and social events for all student media, with diverse, representative guests
- Strengthen the presence of student media on campus through expanded media drop bins in SU cafes and bars
- Media passes for arts & varsity events
I have a wealth of experience in student media at UCL. As Media Rep in 24/25, I oversaw the expansion of student media representation within SU discourse and on campus. I also created and passed the IPSO student media compliance policy, ensuring publication output remains compliant and consistent.
I also served as an Editor at The Cheese Grater for 3 years, writing on a range of topics. Last year, I oversaw the publication’s most successful run in over a decade, bringing student journalism back to the forefront of campus life through cutting-edge, student-focused (and award-winning) reporting
In short, my time at UCL has been defined by student journalism. It has been my personal highlight of university life. Indeed, beyond my experience in media-related roles, my greatest asset is the passion, care, and commitment I have for student journalism at our university. I believe student journalism is essential to a vibrant student life, and I’m committed to ensuring it remains a core part of the SU’s vision and priorities. If elected, I will ensure that no publication is left behind, and that we all can flourish in our diversity, making UCL’s student life brighter for all.
