There are a great many ways the University and Student Union could improve its accommodation of members of our network, and I aim to help bring those improvements to fruition. I am open to the ideas of others, but some of my own are as follows:
- Better accommodation options in student halls for mature students, not just postgraduates.
- Better training on ageism to club & society leaders, and students and staff in general
- Better facilities for parents on campus.
- Encouraging clubs & societies to run more events that are family-friendly, and generally welcoming to mature, part-time and carer students.
As a society Treasurer, have learned to work in a committee and perform a range of tasks for the good of a community.
I can be both a leader and team player, as I believe I’ve demonstrated in my committee roles as well as previous employment.
Most importantly I listen and am respectful, as while I can take initiative, I understand my views and experience are not necessarily those of everyone else in a network such as this, and I do not have all the answers.
I have volunteered for charities in the past, and work diligently and passionately at whatever is thrown at me.
As a mature undergraduate student, I believe I have a fairly unique insight into some of the challenges that affect members of our group, excluded from “postgraduate-only” and studying mostly alongside younger students. I think this experience has led me to understand why we need to do more to help mature, part-time, parent and carer students thrive and be included.
If elected, I will throw my all into working to improve the representation and University experience of all the groups this network represents.
