Candidates

Malek Issa (He/Him)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

As a clinical pharmacist and DBA Health candidate, I bring over eight years’ experience in primary care, health policy, and digital health transformation. I have led multidisciplinary teams, including managing 23 community pharmacy sites, and contributed to national policy as a GP-based independent prescriber. My DBA focuses on AI in primary care. I also served as Year 3 Rep during my MPharm, which, alongside my professional roles, gives me a deep understanding of academic governance, student advocacy, and collaborative leadership. I’m ready to represent you.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

If elected, I will strengthen the connection between students and faculty leadership, ensuring that our ideas and concerns are part of key decisions. I aim to strengthen communication, create more visibility for applied and practice-based research, and advocate for fairer, more consistent support across departments. I want to help build an inclusive research culture where postgraduate researchers feel heard, supported, and able to thrive both academically and professionally.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I understand the challenges of balancing research, professional identity, and leadership in today’s academic environment. I bring real-world experience, a collaborative mindset, and a strong commitment to making the research journey more inclusive and supported. I will listen, act, and represent your interests with integrity. Whether you’re early in your research or navigating complex projects, I’ll work to ensure your voice is heard and your experience valued across the faculty.

Siqi (Kiki) Ma (she/her)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

Having studied and researched across China and the UK, I understand the academic, cultural, and emotional challenges that international students encounter. As vice-president of my undergraduate international students’ department, I led a buddy program that supported newcomers’ adjustment, wellbeing, and engagement. Combined with my research in gender and health studies, these experiences have strengthened my empathy, cross-cultural communication, and leadership qualities I’ll bring to foster inclusion and belonging at UCL.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

If elected, I want to help create a more open, supportive, and caring environment for all researchers. Having experienced the challenges of adjusting to academic life myself, I understand how vital mental health and wellbeing are to our success. I plan to host welcome sessions and Q&As to ease new students into research life, and to organise informal gatherings—like idea-sharing events or alumni talks—that foster connection and belonging. Above all, I’ll advocate for stronger wellbeing awareness and help students make full use of UCL’s support resources.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I believe every research student should feel heard, supported, and part of a community that truly cares. Having gone through the transition into postgraduate research myself as an international student, I know how overwhelming it can be at first. That’s why I want to be a voice for students, helping to make communication with staff easier and wellbeing support more accessible. Most of all, I want to build a warm, close community where we can share, connect, and grow together.

Amir Jalali Monfared (Amir)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

As an incoming student representative and mentor, I’m eager to contribute to improving the postgraduate research experience within our faculty. I bring strong communication skills, empathy, and a proactive attitude, with a genuine interest in representing and supporting my peers.
I’m passionate about creating an inclusive and collaborative environment where every student feels heard, supported, and connected. This role would allow me to build on my upcoming experiences as a rep and mentor, using feedback and dialogue to help shape a positive and engaging research culture across the FPHS.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

If elected, I hope to improve communication between PGR students and faculty, ensuring that all voices — especially those of international and early-stage researchers — are heard and valued.
I want to promote a more connected and supportive community across the different institutes within FPHS, where students can easily access information, share experiences, and feel part of a wider network.
I also aim to highlight issues related to supervision, wellbeing, and career development, working collaboratively with staff to make meaningful improvements to the PGR experience.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Students should vote for me because I genuinely care about creating a supportive, inclusive, and collaborative research community. I’ll listen actively, communicate openly, and represent your views with honesty and commitment to make our PGR experience the best it can be.
