I’d love to run for Sports Director for UCL SingSoc because sport is one of the easiest ways to bring us all together. Whether it’s organising casual games, trying something new, or putting together trips like the ski trip, I think these kinds of activities are a great way for members to bond outside of normal events. It’s also just a good excuse for everyone to take a break from uni work, stay active, and make some great memories together.

I stand as a candidate for Sports Director with the belief that sports are not just about competition, but about building community and belonging. As students studying far from home, it is especially important for us to find spaces that feel familiar and welcoming. Singsoc plays a vital role in creating that sense of home, and I believe sports are some of the most powerful tools we have to strengthen those bonds.

As Sports Director, I will strive to organise inclusive and accessible sporting events that cater to all skill levels, ensuring that everyone feels welcome to participate. These initiatives can range from competitive inter-school tournaments to casual recreational sessions where members can make new friends, stay active, and unwind from academic pressure. By offering a variety of activities, I hope to encourage wider participation and create opportunities for meaningful interaction within the society.

Most importantly, I want to ensure that sports within the society are not solely focused on winning, but on fostering support and shared memories. University life can be academically demanding, and regular sporting activities provide both physical release and mental balance. Through consistent and well-organised events, I aim to cultivate a positive, energetic, and supportive sporting culture. I hope to contribute meaningfully to Singsoc and help make every member’s university experience more connected, healthy, and memorable.

My personal path to sports was unconventional due to fear of approaching what can at times seem like an area of life unwelcome to beginners. However, through my own time pursuing Judo, pole fitness and bouldering, it has opened my eyes to the innumerable benefits exercise can bring.

A common sentiment held by participants in taster sessions I coach reveals great anxieties about being ostracized or looked down upon when attempting something new. This is why my vision for the sports department in Singsoc involves making sporting events more accessible and welcoming to those who may be interested but lack the confidence to participate.

Beyond the existing groups that exist within Singsoc, I believe that there is more that can be done to involve members who wish to attempt new sports in a casual and fun-centric environment, focusing firstly on meeting each member where they are at without judgement. I aim to maintain current groups that regularly meet while opening up opportunities for people wanting to try something new or to simply have fun and destress with their friends.

I strongly believe that sports is something that benefits us holistically, and wish to contribute my vision and efforts to improve upon what the department has created to benefit its members such that more have the opportunity to incorporate it into their lives.

Hi Singsoc, I am Eric!

I am running for the role of Sports Director because I want sports to be the easiest and most welcoming way to find your community at UCL! Sports should not be only for the "sporty" ones, but for anyone who wants to meet new people and take a break from the intensity of uni life in London.

My goal is clear and doable: keep things simple, consistent and build a culture where everyone feels comfortable showing up.

Sports should be the one part of Singsoc where you can turn up as you are, have fun with friends and leave feeling a little more at home.

If elected, I will:

  • Host consistent sports sessions: Well-organised sessions rotating across various accessible sports (bouldering, futsal, badminton, basketball, etc) with clear sign-ups and details shared early.
  • Collaborate with other societies: Joint events and friendly tournaments with other societies to boost turnout, widen networks while keeping costs manageable.
  • Make it welcoming for everyone: Beginner-friendly, no pressure sessions with buddy-matching for beginners and low-cost options where possible.
  • Sports night-out in London: Group outings to watch live professional games in London (e.g. football, tennis, basketball, etc) with simple sign-ups and group travel.
  • Create a community beyond the game: Optional post-sessions suppers or hangouts to help cultivate a sense of community to help newcomers integrate, keep people coming back and turn sports sessions into genuine
