I’m standing as a candidate for Welfare Officer because I think wellbeing is something that often gets overlooked in a degree as demanding as engineering. University life can be incredibly stressful. We have all experienced feelings of disconnect because of lectures, coursework, deadlines, and other various things. A strong and reliable welfare presence within a society can ensure that people don’t just have academic support but personal support as well.
Engineering Soc is a community just as much as it is a space for professional or academic development, and I’d like to help ensure that it is somewhere where people feel comfortable, included, and able to take a step back when things become too overwhelming. It may be that simple things can offer a sense of relief. From relaxed events, opportunities to talk to others going through the same experiences, or simply the idea that there are people in society who care about everyone.
The reason I am standing is that I want to help create that within Engineering Society. I know how it feels to be a fish in an ocean. I know how much it can affect a person. I understand that you might be feeling lost or disappointed, angry, and frustrated, or just down in general. A change of lifestyle, space, and phase of life. University can be intense, but having the right community around you really helps, and I’d love to help strengthen that within the society.
