Lily Tattersall

While London is home to the biggest, most historic courts, I feel at UCL, the criminal law routes often get overshadowed by more modern commercial practices. This is why I have a particular interest in bringing more criminal focused careers to UCL through the Criminal Justice Society

I am standing to be the careers officer because of a deep interest in the subject and witnessing criminal law up close. This was when I completed Court Marshalling at Preston Crown Court, where, shadowing Judge Jeffries KC and witnessing 3 cases, all in different stages of trial, fostered a deep drive into criminal law. This is why, as the careers officer, I will engage with chambers, and criminal solicitor firms, to deliver interactive workshops and panels.

I believe through these contributions, I stand as a strong candidate, because, as the potential careers officer, I want to foster a deep interest in criminal law to others. As criminal law and legal aid faces more limitations, we need people to be the future of the legal advocacy system, and I believe the Criminal justice Society is a place to augment this interest. Through working collaboratively with the rest of the members of the Criminal Justice Society, in events like the Mock Trial competitions, which I was fortunate enough to partake in last November, I do believe that by offering a myriad of opportunities to learn more about the criminal justice system and experience what it is really like will make for the next generation of advocates.
