Aryan Nagpaul

Hello Everyone,

I'm Aryan, and I've had the pleasure of being the Treasurer for Classics Society, and I'm now throwing my hat in the ring to run the society as your President!

I have always had a passion for Classics, whether that is academically or trying to promote Classics to other students.

Our Classics Society is a vibrant, engaging, and unique society here at UCL. For a relatively small department, we have an incredibly active society, frequently putting on events such as our pub socials, speaker series, Toga party and various end-of-term events, and I absolutely love this. I am a well-suited candidate to continue and expand the existing provision in the society, having been your treasurer this year. As president, I would seek wider collaboration between ClassSoc and History Society and other societies of like-minded members, including the London Classicists of Colour, to foster wider collaboration which would allow us to put on larger events with other students, as well as continuing our own more intimate events.

I have thoroughly enjoyed being Treasurer this year. From planning events, tours and lectures to simply meeting and speaking to you all at events, this is a great society to be a part of. I now have the insight into how Classics Society operates, and I am super keen to build on the hard work of this year!

Orlando Greenhow

Hello everyone! My name is Orlando, and I am a second year studying Classics. Over the course of my two years of being a Classics Society member, I have come to know many great and wonderful people from all years, both on the same course or those studying outside the department. And what has brought us together is our love of the ancient world. Indeed, attending many of the events this year, I have realised how important the Classics Society is in fostering those connections between members and providing a place to make friendships and meet new people.

One of the most important things I have learnt, being part of the committee this year, is the importance of including the members in decision making. Listening to what members want and would like to see more of is the crux of why I am running to be President. More often than not, it seemed as if decisions were merely being communicated, rather than asking you what you wanted to do. I want to take what went well and expand upon that, whilst taking in feedback. Granted, most decisions have to be made largely before the start of the next academic year, but if I am elected I would like to immediately start gathering ideas from current members and prospective members for the year ahead. For example, moving the toga party towards a warmer month, running more movie nights and more diversified events. After all, a society is not merely made up of its committee but its members!

Thank you for taking the time to read this :)
