Chess Society: Treasurer

Hi! I’m Kush Mittal, and I’m excited to announce my candidacy for Treasurer of the UCL Chess Society ♟️

Chess societies thrive when they have the resources to organise tournaments, host events, and support members in competitions. As Treasurer, I want to ensure the society’s finances are well managed so we can continue to expand opportunities for our members.

My Vision:

• Transparent Financial Management
  I aim to maintain clear and responsible budgeting so members know how society funds are being used.
• Funding for Tournaments & Events
  By carefully managing resources and exploring sponsorship opportunities, I hope to support more tournaments, events, and competitive opportunities for members.
• Long-Term Financial Sustainability
  Ensuring the society remains financially stable will allow future committees to continue building and expanding the chess community at UCL.

I am standing for Treasurer because I care about the long term health and accessibility of the Chess Society. A society like ours works best when it is both intellectually serious and financially well run. Good financial management allows the society to host stronger events, invite stronger players, subsidise tournaments, and ensure that participation is not limited by cost.

Chess is a game that rewards careful planning, foresight, and discipline. I think the same mindset applies to managing a society’s finances. The Treasurer’s role is not simply bookkeeping. It is about allocating resources thoughtfully so that the society can grow while remaining stable. I would aim to maintain clear and transparent accounts, plan budgets in advance, and ensure that spending directly supports the society’s core activities.

I am particularly interested in making competitive opportunities more accessible. Entry fees for tournaments and travel can quickly become barriers for students who want to represent UCL. Where possible, I would work to allocate funds so that committed players are supported and the society can participate more actively in university chess events.

More broadly, I want the society to remain a place where people come not only to compete but to think, learn, and enjoy the game together. Responsible financial management is a quiet but essential part of making that possible.
