Salaam! I’m Saarah, a second year Medical Physics student. Getting involved in SJP this year has been an invaluable experience; through my active role within the Divest UCL Team, and participation in SJP campaigns including Al-Aqsa Week, SJP has been a pivotal part of my time at UCL. From condensing research to create digestible resources, to collaborating with students and societies, SJP has allowed me to contribute towards a community that champions humanity above all else.

In the upcoming academic year, I hope to amplify Palestinian voices through speaker events, and cultivate an environment across UCL that recognises the nuanced history of Palestine despite the largely inaccurate story that is often heard. Behind the scenes, I believe it is vital to continue our BDS campaign and to actively encourage UCL to divest from companies directly involved in the injustices in Palestine.

Above all, I aim to encourage our communities simply to talk – change, after all, starts with us. This can be achieved through a blend of informal socials and educational events – both of which allow us to truly converse and learn from one another.

I am keen to work alongside my colleagues in a cause that has always been so close to my heart. I hope that as President of SJP, I will truly be able to make a difference by bringing together our many diverse communities and fostering an environment at UCL that uplifts Palestinian voices and takes an active stand against the oppression of Palestinians.
