When you’re on the piste, it’s only you and your opponent. Fencing to me has always embodied discipline, wit, and athleticism, and though I’ve always thought of it as a solitary sport, your team is always there, cheering you on. I’ve been fencing for nearly a decade, yet this past year competing and training as a part of UCL’s womens’ first team has been a strikingly rewarding experience as my fundamental approach to the sport shifted. I’ve grown to truly appreciate the comradery and cohesion that comes with any collective endeavour. As one of the few freshers on the team and new to London, I understand the importance of a welcoming environment. I want to extend the same opportunities for connection, enjoyment, and exploring our shared passion for the sport that I've experienced to others, regardless of their skill level or weapon. The popularity of our beginner-friendly sessions this year, the friendliness and sense of belonging at socials that I experienced and the commitment to making fencing - a historically intimidating sport - accessible have inspired me to continue to cultivate these core values and pass this on to others. As social secretary, I hope to encourage more fencers to embrace and engage with the collaborative spirit of our sport, recognizing its value in shaping us both on and off the piste.
