Dear fellow Turkish Society members,

As your Welfare Officer this year, I will work to ensure that all members will have access to the resources and support they need to thrive while studying here at UCL. For me, Turkish Society has always been an opportunity for me to connect with fellow students who are Turkish and also those who are interested in Turkish culture. Even more so, it became an interconnected community with an undying support system. As a member of this committee, I want to foster this community and ensure such a wonderful environment continues to be cultivated. Growing up in multiple countries, I strive to use this experience to connect and provide support for members coming from all different backgrounds. As your first point of contact for welfare, I hope to be a welcoming, comforting, and reliable presence for you all next year.

I believe that together we can create a supportive and caring community.

Çok teşekkürler :)

Melisa Ucer

Coming from a Turkish immigrant family, I know how important having a community in a foreign country can be. After turbulent times following COVID and recently the Turkey earthquakes I witnessed how big of a Turkish cohort there is in UCL who are longing for a society to make connections and support each other. That’s why I would be honoured  to be a part of the committee next year to make this society thrive and be the best it can be. I believe I have the compassion and empathy to carry out this role. I am always willing to listen to anyone having problems or concerns whether this be society related or in general and offer advice/help while also signposting to help within UCL. I am a huge advocate for mental health help and take this with the upmost importance and hopefully I can be a helping hand to anyone going through tough times. Being a new student in a new university can be nerve-wrecking let alone in a whole new country. Being born in London but also being brought up heavily with Turkish culture I believe I have a unique set of experiences to be able to help with any queries you may have relating to life in the U.K. too.
I look forward to being your welfare officer and all the great things to come in the Turkish Society.
