I am standing for Sports Director because I want to make sure Singapore Society can stay a fun and light-hearted society which has members bonding through Sport.

After going for Ski Trip 2022 and falling one too many times on my head, I wholeheartedly believe it is the best Singsoc event till date, hence igniting my interest in taking up this role. I believe that London presents us many opportunities to gather our members to bond through sport (be it hiking, snow sports, team sports etc.), hence I will aim to organise such sporting events and interest groups within Singsoc and in collaboration with other societies. I also aim to make our sporting events inclusive, catering to all: from the not-so-avid to those who want to challenge themselves.

I will undertake the responsibilities to plan and execute key sporting events such as the annual (or bi-annual?) Ski Trip, Warwick Summer Games and Nottingham Winter Games. I will also be open to hearing ideas for events and interest groups from everyone, and will try my best to accommodate all requests.

If you vote me, THUMBS UP MAN! and if you don't vote me... BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

(Terms and conditions apply. Jacob is not responsible for your personal health and safety unless he is the Sports Director.)

Homesickness - The strong wish to be at home / to be surrounded by familiar things. That was my initial fear when I made the decision to further my studies in London rather than riding through the comfortable wave at a local university. However, through the many initiatives of SingSoc, I was able to settle down quickly and find a close-knitted community that made my time in London here an enjoyable one. Having benefited from the previous Exco’s efforts, I was inspired to run for this year’s committee to give back to my fellow Singaporeans.

As I was part of the Junior Comm, I was able to work closely with the current Exco in the planning and execution of events and understand how the society is being managed as a whole. While this experience allows me to give valuable inputs on future activities, it also gave me many ideas of what I could potentially do with the society in the future.

I love organizing sporting events and connecting with people through sports, and that is why I will be running for the Sports Director position. Sports creates conversations by providing a common ground, and a unified sense of purpose which can bring Singaporean from all walks of life together. If I am elected, I will be restructuring the management for sports and make it easily accessible for everyone. As I have strong connections with other society members and schools, SingSoc can expect more collaboration with other societies (e.g. Msoc, ThaiSoc) as well as SingSoc from other universities.

What do Singaporeans in UCL do when not mugging? Sports and gai gai.

How do they usually do this? By finding some lobang with a small group of Singaporeans who play regularly and asking friends for their trip itinerary.

SingSoc has not had a very strong sports culture. I intend to foster and build it up by having SingSoc become a platform for networking and connecting like-minded people, enhancing the existing organic sports bases that already exist. This way, Singsoc can coordinate with various interest groups to directly support sports initiatives and sports culture within the Soc.

Beyond these, I aim to have Singsoc serve as a meeting place for eager Singaporeans to come together and make inroads into new sports and interest areas. Competitive or recreational, SingSoc is a place to find your tribe.

Sports serve as a common ground to connect with others, giving opportunities to leverage and collaborate with many of UCL's existing sports clubs that Singaporeans existing members. Beyond that, I see SingSoc sports as not only limited to UCL. I aim to expand intercollegiate sports and joint activities within KILU as much as possible. (GCBs and BCGs rejoice)

Advice for travelling overseas is very often dependent on who you know. I seek to use SingSoc sports as a means to create greater dialogue and information sharing regarding travel, helping Singaporeans society-wide plan better activities and trips based on others' experiences and contributions.

Help me to help you.
