Simi Dhesi

Sat sri akaal!

I'm Simi and I'm a first year student studying Biochemistry.

My love for Punjabi culture started young growing up in a big stereotypical crazy Punjabi family. I believe the culture has a lot to offer: lively parties, delicious food, dancing, vibrant outfits and being inclusive to all.

From a young age, I have always attended and taught at my local Punjabi school. This allowed me to reach out and connect with people who have common beliefs and morals as me. I firmly believe that everyone deserves the love and support I receive from this community, regardless of background.

Having been a teacher at the Punjabi school for the past 5 years, I was responsible for organising and advertising events and lessons to engage and attract more students. I was able to identify interests and tailor material to the students and parents.

Being a member of my council when I was at school, I have a lot experience in using my creativity to sell events and make them stand out. Working in retail for 3 years has also improved my communication and time management skills.

My overall aim is to expand the society's visibility at UCL to give anyone the opportunity to benefit from being involved :)

Hayden R S Boora

As an active member and first year representative of punjabi society I want to carry on next year with a bigger role. I know that being part of a cultural society enabled me to branch out in unimaginable ways when I first joined university and I hope to continue this legacy next year through the role of the welfare officer. I believe I suit the role of welfare officer due to me being part of the LGBTQ+ community within a culture that is not typically as accomodating, I personally have been through a sense of not belonging and know how to combat this as well as possessing the traits to ensure others do not feel the same. Inclusivity is something that is really important to me and through this role I will ensure I pitch ideas for events that allow for the aforementioned, from drinking to non drinking events to those who want to learn more about their history and culture compared to those who already have a good understanding. Also, I will ensure everyone feels safe and comfortable at any events and take the appropriate steps to action anything that has made anyone feel uncomfortable.

I am applying for welfare officer because I think that I am an easy person to talk to and would be an empathetic ear for all members of the society to interact with.

Maintaining a safe and fun community, which is aligned with the core beliefs of Punjabi Society, would be a high priority for me. I believe and understand the ethos of the society and would be a strong advocate for all those within it. I would be able to maintain a fair and unbiased view on all decisions and be able to resolve any issues peacefully within the society, or the committee itself.

Recently having suffered a physical injury I have understood how UCL supports students through difficult times, as well as learning how to support yourself. Using this I feel I would be someone who could guide and assist members who are struggling, whether it be mentally, physically, or academically. I can do this by being someone reliable to communicate with or talking them through the different types of support systems available.

Further emphasising why, I would be a good welfare officer is that I would enjoy the role and so would be a dedicated and fun member of the committee. I enjoy all aspects of being Punjabi and would love to be able to be part of the next committee. Making sure it maintains its beliefs and safety, whilst helping the society grow bigger and better.
