Building your commercial awareness is one of the most annoying parts of getting into law! But I think, once it's demystified, it's one of the most interesting and fun bits of the process. I want to make it easier to build the commercial awareness skills we're going to need when applications come around. I also, hopefully, want to help to make building commercial awareness something that makes people even more excited to get into the legal field!

Jiya Imran

Being the commercial awareness officer this year has enabled me to understand what goes into producing a well-formed newsletter. My experience will enable me to write and improve the newsletters for next year and ensure that they are understandable and of the best quality. After attending many different open days at different law firms, I have found that commercial awareness is an intrinsic skill needed when excelling in applications for law firms and I would like to contribute to a page that helps other students increase their chances of securing a place on their dream law firm. Overall, my experience in writing the commercial awareness newsletter this year and my passion to aid other students in developing their commercial awareness makes me and excellent candidate for the role.

Harry Zain-Prosser

Hi, my name is Harry Zain-Prosser. I am currently a second year history student running for the role of Commercial Awareness Officer.

Why me?

  • Though this is very generic, I keep up to date with current affairs by reading Financial Times, The Economist and Watson’s Daily.
  • I have a genuine interest and experience in commerce visible in how I have managed my own successful Depop shop.
  • I have attended various commercial awareness training sessions with SEO/Rare along with having experience in commercial awareness interviews.

I believe possessing strong commercial awareness is key for breaking into the legal world. Additionally, it is an important skill to have as a commercial lawyer.

If elected I will help LFA's members in developing their commercial awareness to a high level. I will carry out this vision by:

  • Creating an easily digestible weekly commercial awareness newsletter. In the newsletter I would discuss a range of current affairs and legal news. Additionally, I would include a section relating to technical commercial awareness, for how law firms are businesses.
  • Running application and interview workshops aimed at enhancing commercial awareness skills.
  • Running a commercial awareness competition testing commercial knowledge.
  • Further developing the LFA’s commercial awareness podcast by inviting special guests and UCL alumni who work/have experience in law. I have previous experience in this field having assisted my friend on his sports podcast.
