Candidates

Shreeya Gorasia

I would love to be part of the Hindu society committee. I have loved every single event that the society as organised and looking forward to many more to come.

I found beginning of first year quite lonely and difficult, but it was through this society I made friends and also had a lot of fun. I would love to help more people in a similar situation and make a difference in the UCL community.

I love contributing ideas for events such as weekly mendhi nights, more 'family' activities like Indian food days, and would love to help plan and organise even more as I appreciate the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.

It would be a great pleasure to give back to the community whether it's for planning fun activities, celebrating the vibrant and important religious events like holi, Diwali and so much more. There are so many possibilities to bring everyone together.

I was amazed by the rangeela performances and know it would not have been so spectacular without the hard work behind the scenes, and would love to make sure the following years rangeela is even bigger.

I would be honoured to be part of the society and will do my very best as the welfare officer.

Abhinav Kandala

I think my strengths and qualities align with those needed to be a successful welfare officer. Having worked in a pharmacy for the past 2 years, this has given me an opportunity to reinforce my interpersonal skills whilst further developing my communication skills, allowing me to make strong bonds quickly with people of all ages/demographics, which would be essential for establishing a good rapport and trust within the committee quickly. During U6th, I was president of 3 different societies which helped me develop vision, essential to foresee any potential issues in planned events, ensuring their smooth running. This aided my teamwork skills & ability to guide others by emotionally supporting them, vital in conflict resolution. I believe I have a positive mindset, which would be key for maintaining high morale during tough times. Active listening is a skill that I have further cultivated whilst mentoring for 3 years, providing a safe space to voice concerns, which is something I would bring to the table, in addition to new ideas. An example idea could be to have a Chai night with dogs/art therapy – focus on welfare. Having faced discrimination, I raised awareness for the impacts this has on mental health by giving a talk which is something I wish to continue doing if I were to join the committee. Finally, my main strengths are that I can maintain positivity, work well under pressure, get along with many people, and finally, my dedication means that I will always show up

Riya B Patel

I want to become a welfare officer for Hindu Society for several reasons. First and foremost, I am passionate about helping others and promoting well-being, and I believe that serving as a welfare officer would provide me with an excellent opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of other Hindu students. Additionally, I am excited about the prospect of developing my personal and professional skills, including empathy, communication, and time management, through this role. I also look forward to building new connections with other members of the society who share my passion for promoting student welfare. Overall, I am excited about the possibility of contributing to creating a more supportive and inclusive campus culture for Hindu students.

Radha Patel

Hey everyone, I’m Radha and I study History, Politics and Economics and I’d love to take on the role of Welfare Officer!

Having an incredible time as part of Hindu Society this year has made me want to ensure other people experience that sense of belonging regardless of their background.

Events like Rangeela and Diwali Ball this year, have made me appreciate the amazing community that Hindu society. As Welfare Officer, I want to ensure that events cater to everyone, bigger events as well as more informative and laid back events. A society is shaped by its members, so including the suggestions and thoughts of people within the society is something I would prioritise as Welfare Officer.

Working in acting and theatre in my spare time means I meet a lot of new people, so I’d like to think I’m someone that’s friendly. I’d be someone in the committee that people could come too for support and to share any thoughts. Working in acting has required me to have good communication and organisational skills which I could use to ensure things run smoothly within the society and also help the rest of the Committee.

I’d love to be Welfare Officer to ensure that the environment of Hindu society continues to be a fun escape and welcoming place for everyone. With your vote, to be honest, I just want to make sure that everyone continues to love being part of this amazing community.

Prachi Saraf

I’d be thrilled to be Hindu Society’s Welfare Officer and help lead one of UCL’s largest cultural societies.

I have really enjoyed taking part in HSoc events over the past year, including Rangeela, Diwali Ball and Jashn, and in this way celebrating the cultural space this society provides. The multiple HSoc socials such as the Diwali Fair in Freshers’ week were also a great way to make new friends, and I want to work behind the scenes with the committee to organise even more amazing events like this to give more people the same opportunity.

My HSoc highlight has been performing as a singer in Rangeela as part of the music act, ‘Milaap’. Not only were rehearsals the most enjoyable part of uni for a month, they also helped me develop time management skills that would be invaluable to the role.

Also, my past leadership experience will be useful, having been leader of my school’s Music Society where I organised a few concerts with my peers and coordinated with other committee members. Further, being the First Year Rep of UCL Live Music Society has given me experience being on a university committee, and I would love to learn even more through the role in HSoc’s 2023-4 committee!

I love connecting with people and would love to help lead this culturally rich society. I hope to see you as Welfare Officer soon!

Anushka Agrawal

Hello! I’m Anushka, and am an Economics student. During my time at UCL, I have immensely enjoyed events and socials held by the Hindu Society, and wish to pay it forward by helping the society grow. For this reason, I am running for the position of Welfare Officer.

If elected as Welfare Officer, I will:

  1.  Be the first point of contact for all members, and provide assistance regarding any individual or society-related issues.
  2.  Increase member engagement by helping organise more events and smoothening communication between members and committee
  3. Represent the views of members in committee discussions
  4. Create a safe, collaborative and supportive environment within the society

Having launched my school’s first Economics Club, I developed strong communication, social and event-organising skills. I am ambitious, committed to the cause and receptive to others' ideas and suggestions. By working closely with the team, I hope to make your experience at Hindu Society more engaging and memorable.

Shreya Pathak

Hi, My name is Shreya and I believe I would be well fitted for the role of welfare officer as it is well suited for my personality and skillset. I have thoroughly enjoyed and participated in the Hindu society events so far such as Garba, Rangeela and even Take Me Out, showing my deep interest and commitment towards the society. Being part of Rangeela, I enjoyed getting back in touch with my roots and connecting with people from similar backgrounds. I observed how level- headed decision making and effective communication maintains harmony between the members of the group.

Furthermore, my experience in the Just Bollywood dance team showed that coordination, time-management, and communication are required to strengthen team dynamics. I observed and learnt how mishaps were solved between the team members and believe I can bring this skillset to the role to provide rational solutions to any concerns people may have.

The importance of mental health in this role really stands out to me. I aim to provide support to the committee members through my positive mindset and warm nature, hence would like to establish any welfare support as required.

Overall, I am confident I would be well-suited and dedicated towards this role and can't wait to see what Hsoc has to offer next year!

Sohum Sen

Hello, I am Sohum, a third-year Mathematical Computation student, and I am eager to apply for the Welfare Officer position for the Hindu Society.

Over my three years at UCL, I have held various society committee leadership roles ranging everything from Director to Treasurer.

I am passionate about building relationships, which I believe are crucial for any organization's growth and success. As the Welfare Officer, I am committed to ensuring the well-being of all members of the society and creating an inclusive and supportive community.

My experience as a Treasurer for a large society has provided me with the skills necessary to build a reliable and inclusive community. Working closely with the President and senior team, I was able to achieve the following:

  • Growing our member base to over 300, making us one of the most active and vibrant societies on campus.
  • Securing large sponsorships for the first time ever, enabling us to fund more initiatives and increase our scale.
  • Being the primary point of contact for all matters with the Student Union, from navigating form submissions to liaising with them on tight deadlines and managing finances.

With my strengths in organization, communication, and teamwork, I am confident that I am the right fit for the Welfare Officer position. I am excited to contribute my skills and experience to create a positive and fulfilling experience for all members of the Hindu Society.

Vedant Dubey

Hi! My name is Vedant Dubey, and I am a first-year Physics student from Slough and Pune. I am running for Welfare Officer of UCL Hindu Society 2023/24.

I would love to become Welfare Officer as I am interested in improving the experience and well-being of all members of UCL HSoc. I am also aware of the pressures that certain socials/events may place onto members, and will try my hardest to make sure that everybody feels comfortable and accommodated. Helping with any mental health concerns will also be a huge focus in my role, and I will always be on hand if anybody has any issues or just needs somebody to speak to!

Having been a First Year Representative of the Hindu Society this year and a part of Rangeela Acting, I know a lot about how the society runs and the wonderful community that has been built here, which I have thoroughly enjoyed. This means that I am well-equipped to answer any day-to-day queries that members may have, and I hope to be a friendly face for everyone!

My promise for next year is to make sure everybody has a great time at all of the events, as HSoc are, after all, one of the biggest cultural societies here at UCL, representing many people’s connection to their religion at University. I cannot wait for the opportunity to give back to this community by being your Welfare Officer next year, and I know that I can help make this the best year for UCL Hindu Society!
