Zoey Soh

I’m Zoey, a 3rd year BASc student soon returning from a study aboard at Northwestern University. I became involved with data journalism while working with their student publication as the assistant data visualisation editor.

I’m running for this role because I love writing and using data to tell stories. I want to share this with as many people as possible and as the Data Journalism Lead, I would:

  1. Work with the Event Officer to host events with data journalists from news outlets like the Financial Times and The Economist
  2. Connect with UCL publications like UCL Pi Media to identify data visualisation opportunities to share with those interested
  3. Create a platform for people to share their articles and visualisations
  4. Organise workshops to learn data visualisation skills for journalism, regardless of coding experience

I’ve learned so much about the power of using data visualisations for storytelling and making working with data accessible to all. Though I use Python for personal projects, I teach reporters how to use no-code platforms like Flourish and ArcGIS to create visualisations for their stories. I’ve also written articles based on data obtained, so I’m experienced with the intersection of journalism and data! Some fun projects I’ve done include tracking tweets about conspiracy theories and creating live election result maps for the 2022 US midterm elections.

I’m super excited to return to UCL and work with others interested in data journalism!
