I am grateful to have been part of Book Club this year as it was a way to unwind and disconnect from the readings I would usually do for my degree, while also meeting incredibly welcoming and lovely people. I am now running for the position of president as I want to contribute to the fun and safe space already created while attracting more members to explore their feelings and thoughts literature!

I plan to

  • retain the choice of poems and short stories for the weekly meetings, as it is an amazing way to explore many genres without a huge time commitment
  • implement “thematic reading” weeks where we explore stories and poems relevant to LGBTQ+ History Month, Mental Health Awareness Week, Black History Month, Disability History Month, etc.
  • foster more literary-themed socials outside UCL as well as collaborative events with other societies at UCL and in London
  • preserve the warm, cozy environment the Book Club has created while also helping more students find their voice through literature, or even rekindle their passion for reading
  • create opportunities for book recommendations and exchanges, books & tea/wine nights, and events where anyone who wants to share their own writings can do so.

Ultimately, if I am your president next year, I will maintain the welcoming environment of Book Club for all students who want to find solace and relaxation in between the chaos of deadlines, and plan more events that will bring together members for fun yet stimulating discussions.
