Meriam Abdelmoumene

Salam everyone! I'm Meriam and I'm running for the position of Welfare Officer :)

Within the role, I would be committed to taking care of the members of the society as well as the committee, as we would often be dealing with difficult topics that some may have personal relations to or feel strongly about. I am also aware of the activist burnout and compassion fatigue that some people may experience. As welfare officer, I would ensure UCL SJP remains a safe and comfortable space for people to discuss these issues and will also extend a hand to those who may need somebody to speak to on a more individual basis. Additionally, I would work towards creating links with activist charities that can help us deal with the hurdles faced when protesting for Palestine’s liberation.

Aside from duties as Welfare Officer, it would be exciting to highlight more of Palestine’s beautiful culture, specifically the arts and cuisine, on a committee-wide level. Helping to organise and execute events such as a Tatreez (Palestinian embroidery) Workshop would be an enriching way of engaging our members. Also, over this past year, I have been working with the Islamic Society, creating posts to highlight the crises and injustices affecting the Muslim world. I hope to bring forth the skills I've gained from this experience and work with the SJP committee to shed even more light on the Palestinian cause.
