Candidates

Amrita Bal

Having been on the Sikh Society committee for two years and through attending almost all events I have gotten know the members and the society well. I am approachable, amiable and always have a smile on my face. I would be successful as Welfare Officer because I am always willing to listen and lend a hand when needed and as a sociable person I enjoy engaging and talking with people. I’m easy to talk to and very understanding and willing to help others with their problems. As Welfare Officer I would ensure that we place more of an emphasis on our members’ mental health.

Ivneet K Ghatoura

I would like to nominate myself for welfare officer, as this year Sikh society has made a major impact on my university experience, considering last year everything was online. Therefore, I would also like to contribute and be part of the committee, making everyone else’s experience as good as mine was this year. I felt so welcomed at all the events I went to despite, not knowing anyone there. As a welfare officer, I would like to make sure everyone feels welcomed into Sikh society. I would also like to implement mental health talks, as it is an important topic and it would be very beneficial for everyone. I am empathetic, approachable, and willing to make time for others, which will make me a good welfare officer. Hopefully, I will create a positive impact on university students.

Simran Basra

I wish to apply for the role of the Welfare Officer because I have undertaken a similar role in the past throughout my school years and I really enjoyed the role. I believe I am welcoming, kind and I enjoy meeting/talking to new people. I have worked in collaboration with Mental Health Foundations in the past so I have experience in setting up collaborations and events. Raising mental health awareness is something I am passionate about and I would love to be the friendly face that people can talk to. I would be honoured to be part of the committee because it's a friendly and fun environment and I believe I would fit in well and bring a welcoming energy.

Anjali Bilku
Jaya Nagi

Hi! My name is Jaya and I am excited to be running for Welfare Officer in Sikh Society. I believe this is a very important role as it mainly focuses on the mental health and well being of students. Being at a prestigious university like UCL can come with academic and social stresses. Therefore I believe it is important that members know that there is help and support readily available.

As welfare officer I would seek to:

  • Continue with the events and activities already being held within the society. For example, sports is a great way to de-stress and get your mind off work, so these team events would be really beneficial to many
  • Make Sikh Society a warm and welcoming environment for anybody, regardless of their background, to come and meet new people and learn about the religion
  • Create a medium for anybody to talk about their concerns and worries, as well as providing sufficient advice and support
  • Work with UCL services to inform others of the many ways the university is here to help and support students with their concerns

I am extremely passionate about mental health and believe it is important to raise awareness about the importance of good mental well-being. I would work hard with the rest of the committee to make sure this message is put across through society events, talks, social media posts and more!
