Candidates

Srishti Thakur

My name is Srishti and I am a 2nd year History, Politics and Economics student and I think I would be a great candidate for the Events Officer.

I joined Sign Language society because I wanted to learn a different form of communication. I was inspired by what Rose (Strictly Come Dancing Winner) achieved and it showed me that within society, we are becoming more understanding but we have some way to go. I love helping people and I have seen how a simple act of generosity can help. The pandemic made me realise how much I cared for child welfare and I’m hoping to incorporate BSL in my next volunteering (reading with children).

As Events Officer, I would try and run events that would show how communication does not solely revolve around speech. E.g, working with a dance society since one does not need to hear music to appreciate it or with gaming, whereby visual communication is more important. It may feel silent but with visual cues and hand gestures I hope to show how easy it is to talk! Also, I would love to work with the local community and encourage schools to incorporate BSL in class. I hope members can help promote BSL and workshops are a great place to start. I would work with UCL Volunteering services to connect with local schools to encourage learning about BSL. As a society we can learn together with the younger generation, show our kindness to the deaf community, learn an amazing skill, and help anyone who is feeling isolated!

Yuri Son

*Signs Hello* Hello to all members of the Sign Language Society!

I'm Yuri, and currently studying Cancer Biomedicine - very niche I know, and I hope the events I will be able to organise will be as niche and special :)

Due to the ongoing effects of covid, it was hard to see many events could not take place this year, despite the big efforts from the current committee members. As we move towards post-covid, I'm hoping we will be able to organise more socials within London and also with other London Uni's - while keeping safe too!

My Aims:

  • Organise regular events where we will be able to utilise and practice our BSL skills
  • Create a space where we can bond as members
  • Collaborate with other uni's and societies

Ultimately, my main priority will be to make sure we have had a fun and memorable time after an event.

Thank you so much for reading :)
