How many people do you know in UCL med school, or even your cohort? It may be a few or very little - my aim is to unite the people of RUMS as we recover from our “COVID years” – and I don’t think there’s a better way than through RUMS events.

For the first year of medical school, I struggled to feel a sense of belonging in RUMS. Living from home made it hard and the fact it was online made it even harder. Nevertheless, having experienced the open arms of the people around me in my 2nd year, I now feel well and truly part of RUMS and want to contribute to making everyone else feel the same way.

After talking to a variety of people throughout the year, I understand it isn’t easy to get yourself out there all the time and it is often hard to self-integrate into RUMS various societies and traditions.

I am here to transform this and bring a real unity to RUMS – whether you do or don’t drink, whether you enjoy playing sports or watching movies and whether you’re here in London or with us remotely,

My guarantees are:

  1. Running events consistently throughout the year, for preclinical and clinical students, ensuring a wide range of events
  2. Bringing us more student friendly prices
  3. Integrating the wider and diverse community of RUMS with more inclusive events

Lastly, I’m here to maintain an online and in person presence for people to feedback to, RUMS is here for everyone, and everyone deserves a voice.

UDHAY OR NO WAY

Shahyr Shezad

Hi! My name is Shahyr and I’m running to be your Events VP!

Arranging events in my first two years as well as enjoying my refreshers as an attendee, has allowed me to view what an event is like for both participants and organizers. For me, events are a way to connect with my year as well as the wider RUMS community and have always given me something to look forward to, a way to destress and make lifelong friendships. As your Events VP, I want to provide each and everyone of you with the same opportunity.

If elected, I strive to deliver inclusive events, alongside the ideas in my manifesto. I will use your feedback to improve our classic events as well as introduce fun, new ones.

YOU are RUMS and YOU have a say, if you are a part of a club or not, if you drink or don’t it doesn't matter, I will make sure that there is an event for everyone.

You are RUMS and I hope to give you all an amazing year.

It would be my privilege to be your Events VP and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask away!

Tommy Jenkins

Events have been a highlight of my UCLMS journey. Since day 1, RUMS has been a constant source of support for me and I loved its sense of community. During the pandemic, I felt distanced from RUMS, which is why I joined the events subcommittee this year to help contribute to that loving energy, especially for the Y1&2s who lost valuable experiences due to Covid.

I loved this role and prioritised seeking feedback. I used conversations with our community to shape this manifesto. I want to use the platform of Events VP to make RUMS events even more inclusive, fun and for more people!

I pledge to:

  • Increase inclusivity

Some RUMS members feel that too many events revolve around drinking and that some are too costly. I hope to increase breadth of event types, e.g a talent show and 'primary school sports day', and better promote inclusivity in existing events.

  • Improve traditions

I will preserve our favourite traditions, whilst removing heteronormativity in events like pub crawl, creating new challenges that better align with our values. I will revamp our more chill events, which often have a lower turnout e.g. scavenger hunt. I'm hoping to introduce a winter formal and spread some RUMS cheer in the bleak wintertime.

  • Broaden our focus

Many events are catered to pre-clinical students, esp. Y1s. I aim to organise more events uniting each clinical year (e.g. refreshers socials), as well as postgraduate and external iBSc socials.
