Japan Society: Events Coordinator

Hi everyone! My name is Vanshita, and I’ll be applying to be the treasurer for the Japan society.

Having lived in Japan my whole life (17+ years), the country holds a special place in my heart. It is home for me.

Although I was born in India, I moved to Tokyo when I was just one year old. I have spent my entire life in Japan before coming to the UK to study at UCL. I am very familiar with the Japanese culture, language, people, and all the other little things. I have immense respect for this place, and I am always grateful for the fact that I had the opportunity to experience my childhood there. I am applying for this role because I want others to be able to get a gist of Japan (whilst being in the UK). Whether it the food or the festivals, I want everyone to feel welcomed to the Japanese society. I am a great fit for this role because I have had leaderships roles in the past, whether it’s being part of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics or volunteering at G20 summit in japan, I have always given my best. If elected, I promise to make everyone’s experienceat the JSOC a memorable one!よろしくね!!

Hi! I’m Haruna, a 2nd-year student. I’m running for events coordinator because Japan Society made my “uni experience”. The one friend I made at the very first event slowly grew into a friend group. With them, I’ve spent countless late nights, dying each other’s hair and playing UNO until 4am. I cannot express how grateful I am for them because I understand how lonely the "uni experience" can be as I spent my 1st year online. Next year, I hope to give back to the society by helping others live their “uni experience”.

As an events coordinator, my 2 goals are:

• Boost transparency and communication between the committee and members to gain feedback and continuously improve events
• Strike a better balance between social and cultural events to satisfy members with various interests

In fact, I’ve already taken initiative towards my first goal - check it out!

I strive to achieve these using the skills I’ve honed:

• Leadership, management, and organization - Hosted a 24hr marathon, involving 44 members and raising over £1500 for charities
• Problem-solving and communication - Led domestic and international sporting events for schools in East Asia
• Understanding the deep cultural connection between Japan and UCL - Working with UCL admissions as a Japan ambassador

こんにちは！I’m Nanaka, running for Event Coordinator.

Sound familiar? You want to put yourself out there, make new friends, have new experiences, but – the events aren’t for you. I understand this, and although JSOC has given me a sense of home and helped me feel comfortable in a new environment, there’s always room for improvement. As Event Coordinator, I will make JSOC a place for everyone, by providing exciting and inclusive events that you can engage with and enjoy!

Mainly, I will facilitate communication between committee and society members so that events are what you ask for, by creating a forum where committee members can hear the voices of society members and ask for any feedback to improve upcoming events.

Some of my aims are:

• Frequent social events to offer opportunities to meet for casual conversation e.g. pub social, quiz night
• Organise more Japanese holiday/calendar events to experience the passing of time with Japanese culture, e.g. Setsubun
• Food/drink tours – trips to Japanese cafés, sake tastings, etc
• Work to increase budgets and host events with partner shops and other societies

I promise events will be relaxed, comfortable and fun - for everyone. I have previous experience working with PTA and organising events, have great organisational and communication skills and I am very approachable and willing to take in any ideas. You can leave it to me :)
