Dance has the been the biggest and best part of my first year at UCL. I have made most of my friends and best memories from Indian Society events. Combining these, and inspired by this year's dance directors, I would love to stand for Dance director for Indian Society. I'm classically trained for over 10 years in Kathak and over the past few years have trained in other styles such as Commercial and Hip Hop. As a graduate, I've had experience as a choreographer for shows at my previous University and therefore have plenty of experience booking rooms, working with a team and organising rehearsals (skills that would be useful for weekly dance classes and shows). I've taken part in Just Bollywood twice (allowing me to explore multiple dance styles and observe over the years what makes a team stand out). Along with my experiences with Just Bollywood and my recent amazing experience at Rangeela, I've been inspired to go for a role that allows me to re-live those experiences again but with more responsibility.
I have had a passion for dance and productions since the age of 4, which has been cultivated by my mother who has a Prabhakar in Kathak and my aunt Kanika Kapoor who is a Bollywood singer. Throughout the years dance has provided me with the opportunity to express my creativity while maintaining a disciplined lifestyle. My classical training in Ballet, Tap and Kathak allowed me to participate in many school productions, successfully fulfilling the role of the main choreographer in shows such as 'Chicago'. I was also a member of my school's commercial street and hip-hop club since the age of 12, where I was the dance captain of the entire school in my final year. I choreographed and led classes as well as facilitated rehearsals for over 150 girls ranging from age 12-18 years. My experience with Rangeela this year has inspired me to continue pursuing my passion for choreography, while setting my expectations for the high standard of choreography at university.
The skills I have acquired over the years have prepared me well to choreograph unique and visually interesting dance pieces that will cater to and entertain our audience for 'Just Bollywood', as well as effectively teach the weekly Bollywood dance classes while creating a friendly and enjoyable environment. I believe that my previous dance training, combined with my experience of choreographing and leading classes, will allow me to successfully carry out the role of dance director if I am given this opportunity.
