Being a part of UCLWHC has shaped my second year massively and this is something I am incredibly grateful for. Welfare is integral to any sports club but it is especially important to Hockey given how close our community is but also, how much more could be done. I may be known for the occasional (perhaps frequent...perhaps every time) cry in Scala which may make you question how useful I'll be as welfare sec but because I've been there, I can hopefully help you through it. I won't back down from any social so I'll be there for tactical Phineas TCs but also weekly drop-ins, mental health walks, and better communication with the UCLMHC welfare sec to address issues that affect both clubs. At the start of this year, I threw myself in at the deep end joining the club so I know how terrifying it is, but hopefully I'm approachable enough to point you in the right direction or maybe you'd want to have a chat directly. I would feel privileged to be a part of our committee and improve the club we love so much.
Please see my official manifesto at the AGM: this is just an introduction :)
This year I joined the club as fresh-faced fresher and hockey beginner, and immediately felt incredibly welcomed and at home with you all. I’ve made an amazing group of friends, and I never thought I’d ever say this, but Wednesdays are my favourite day of the week!
I would therefore love to be your Welfare Secretary next year. I think I would be a good welfare sec, as I’m always at training and at (nearly!) every social, and therefore a face you would regularly see. I’m approachable, friendly, and always happy to lend a helping hand (see photo of me graciously tying 1XI cap shoelaces in Scala). So, if you’re struggling with a wardrobe malfunction, have a sick friend that needs to be taken care of, or just in need of a hug, then I’m your girl.
As your welfare sec I would plan events alongside the social and volunteering secs, these could include:
- Bowling, crazy golf and Lido swimming during Mental Health Week
- Museum trips and talks during Black History Month
- More mixed activities (like a sports day) with the boys during Pride Week
I would also keep Mimi’s initiative of a weekly drop in with the option of making it campus based where possible. I would work closely alongside the team captains to ensure everyone is happy and settled at training as well as at socials, and that all of you get the very most out of your UCLWHC experience.
