Vanessa Lo

Food plays a huge role in my life, helping me appreciate different cultures in the world. My main aim as vice president is to share my passion for food and organise new socials to bring people together. Being in the ABACUS committee, I have experience in hosting events, providing a non-judgemental space for all year groups to connect. As welfare officer, I am prepared to help committee members and support the society when in need. I look forward to making food society a welcoming atmosphere where a group of passionate food lovers can explore different cuisines in London.

Jocelyn Shao

I am running for welfare officer mainly because I believe in the importance of mental health and the role a welfare officer can play in supporting students. We all know that engineering is a demanding course and we do need extra support sometimes to cope with all the stress and anxiety.

I have been a transition mentor this year and it made me realize how much I love supporting others and listening and signposting when people need me. I promise as a welfare officer I would be available as often as people need me and offer all the support I can.

Natalie Nguyen

Hello everyone! I am Natalie, a year 2 NatSci student running for Welfare Officer. As an introverted student from abroad, I find navigating in a new environment, forming connections and making contributions can be very challenging no matter how much I want to, especially after long periods of social distancing due to COVID-19. Therefore, I place a strong emphasis on making sure society members are receiving enough support to feel welcomed, confident in voicing their opinions and in making contributions to collective efforts. I aim to achieve this by being a reliable point of contact and an active listener. I also want to take a step further and facilitate more communication from members, particularly by liaising with other committee members to devise an extensive member feedback system, ranging from direct messages to polls and forms. The goal is to enable members (i.e., you!) to play a more active role, and in turn receive more support. As an international STEM student even before UCL, and an active member in the student council and numerous collaborative projects, I respect and empathise with different points of view. I am confident in finding common grounds but also making impartial judgement, which are useful in resolving conflicts. Overall, you can rest assured I will listen and help resolve your concern, as well as maintain an inclusive environment for everyone. Thanks for your time and hope to be of service next year!
