Pedro Tafur

Dear members

My name is Pedro Tafur and I’m a first year Media student. Here you can see a picture of me at the beginning of the year when the weather was lovely, and I still remembered what a good night of sleep felt like. Nevertheless, most of the changes I have experienced since then are overwhelmingly positive:  my hair has grown back and most importantly I’ve had the chance of growing creatively and making extraordinary friends while working as Film Soc’s Workshop Producer.

After a year of zoom and online meetings we’ve gone back to filmmaking and to watching films on the big screen.  It’s been a pleasure to contribute bringing industry professionals and providing a space for our most experienced members to share their knowledge with us. My wish for the next year is to carry on working as Workshop Producer to organize all the events which are still pending on our agenda and to keep making Film Soc the place where you want to be if you love cinema and want to learn more about the beautiful nightmarish process of filmmaking.

From the Wong Kar Wai fans to the Woody Allen geeks, from those of you who are passionate about HDR to those who prefer 16mm projections, from the expert photographers to the writers and the editors. We can all achieve great things together, so let’s keep working, let’s keep getting high on film!

Laura M Martin

Hi everyone! My name is Laura, I’m a second year Arts and Science student majoring in Neuroscience. I’m originally from Romania but I’ve moved around a lot and spent a majority of my life living in Greece.

I’m running for Workshop Producer as I really love Film Soc and want to help plan as many exciting and informative events as possible. I have experience in doing this as I am one of the current Workshop Producers and would love to continue with it next year. I’ve coordinated many other events in the past as well, such as charity fundraisers and photoshoots. From this, I know how to work well in a team and easily collaborate with others. My background in photography and experience with some filmmaking also allows me to get involved in the more technical aspects of the society as well.

I’m a reliable and organised person that enjoys interacting with and meeting new people. Because of this, I find it easy to reach out to industry professionals and to interact with fellow Film Soc members. I’m also open to listening to everyone’s suggestions and ideas.

I have plenty of ideas for future workshops, especially now that I’ve been able to learn what type of workshops more members prefer and benefit from. I want to help make sure this society stays as inclusive as possible for everyone, regardless of their previous level of knowledge in film.

Thank you for your time and hoping for your confidence!

Muge N Karan

As a Workshop Producer, I would achieve 3 key goals.

Firstly, I would target workshops for members with any level of experience and skills. For workshops without experience requirements, I would ensure that beginners feel empowered to join and included during the workshop.

Second, I would communicate with members of the society to know what they wish to learn, and develop a workshop calendar with them.

Finally, I would seek to discover the skills members could share in workshops. I would aim to increase the collaboration between these students and film industry members to create the workshops.

I have experience developing and running workshops. Working with my supervisor, I created a 90-minute workshop called "Drawing, the easiest thing". I conceptualised exercises to get people who don’t think they can draw, to draw.

My experience as a student rep allowed me to develop my communication and inter-personal skills, that would allow me to reach out to and work with film industry members. Similarly, while I was the General Secretary for a student-led charity, I reached out to professionals and other charities to collaborate with them.

Thank you for reading my manifesto! Feel free to ask me anything about these ideas and share other ideas that you would want to bring to life together!
