I am a double board-certified Ophthalmologist from Switzerland with a broad range of interests from biosciences to global health and diplomacy. I live in the United Kingdom for 3 years and I have contributed to different research projects in London. I am studying at UCL for my second MSc degree.
I would like to become the Welfare Officer because I am interested in inclusion and equality. I would like to improve the situation for students who cannot achieve their full potential due to a challenging background.
What I aim to do:
Make sure everyone feels heard, respected & included. Conduct surveys/polls to identify events people want. Prevent discrimination/racism by sharing information on socials media. Host counseling events-to discuss any worries of society members.
Experiences:
Vice-president Amnesty Society, Unibuddy & Transition Mentor
Work experience with United Nations
In school: Student Council, MUN, Prefect, Led a team to teach Eng. to underprivileged students.
The experiences taught me leadership, teamwork/collaboration & multitasking skills
I genuinely care about creating a welcoming, positive, supportive & inclusive community & will not rest until it is achieved
In the past two years, I have had the privilege of being both a member and a Head of Events of the Diplomacy Society. However, as much as I enjoyed delivering events to our members, this next year I want to focus on bringing the members of our society together. We are the largest political society at UCL and I think there are many opportunities to socialize, network, and participate in activities together. I promise you that in electing me as your Welfare Officer, you will be guaranteed many socials, in-person events, and general discourse on current issues.
I am suitable for this role because I have a long history with this society and thus am aware of what our members expect and need. I have also handled the responsibility of organizing speaker events and thus feel that I have a handle over organizing socials. Finally, I feel the most at peace surrounded by people and I am always excited to meet more, thus I would feel the most natural being a Welfare Officer.
I love communicating. I'd like to be the Welfare Officer because I enjoy getting involved, talking to others, listening and helping them problem solve. My friends call me Sunshine for my warm personality, positivity and can-do spirit. I’m known for wanting to help and I think that is such an immensely important quality for this post because it allows members to communicate openly and effectively.
The Welfare Officer is, perhaps, the backbone of any Diplomacy Society because human relations and negotiations rely so heavily on comfort, effective communication and openness. Any serious issue requires the involved parties to feel validated and easy so that they can listen, speak and navigate the path to a solution as a team instead of working from places of negativity.
I’ve always been a communicator, a dreamer, an artist but, besides that, people perpetually comment on my reliability and dedication. So, if you give me the chance, I can guarantee that I will be extremely enthusiastic about everything I do as I have always proven throughout my experiences in various student government positions. This year, I was also the President of the Yoga and Meditation Club so I am familiar with the nuances of society management.
I believe there will be so much to learn in this role and that I, through my own experiences will be able to teach and contribute as I learn. If my passion has shone through my words then please consider voting for me!
