Liv Urwin

From the moment I joined a debate club at school aged 14, I have come to know the true joys of debating. From the highs of winning my first round at my first competition and becoming my school’s debate captain, to the lows of having my only point be torn to shreds by the opposing side in spectacular fashion, debating has become a great passion of mine. Not only has it allowed me to improve my critical thinking and presentation skills, I have also been able to grow in confidence - that is why I want to be part of the committee. I want the chance to be able to help this society give people a supportive and nurturing environment in which new and old debaters can develop their confidence just as I was able to. Through the social secretary role, I will endeavour to provide social events that allow our family to grow wider and closer. Whether it be a brunch, lunch or cruise, our society will come to see the best socials around!

Naomi Hampton

I am standing because I have been on the team for two years and feel that I will make an excellent social secretary with my vast experience on the team. I have been the President/Vice President of five clubs in the past, and thus possess the necessary skills to successfully complete the job. I regularly attend meetings and have thus seen how the society is run and will be able to smoothly continue this process for next year. I also love socials!!!! I have tons of great ideas and have already implemented monthly course drinks as Student Rep for my course which have been super successful. I want at least monthly, if not bi-weekly, socials for debate and I believe that as social sec I can get this done!

Manca Rakun

Hi everyone! I'm Manca and I have been your Publicity Officer this year. Being involved with the Debating Society for 3 years now, I see our social events as the key part in creating an amazing community and where unforgettable memories and bonds that go beyond debating are made. As Social Secretary I will:

  • Organise more social events – one big social per term is simply not enough! Besides big socials such as Halloween, or Foundation Dinner, I will organise other social events, such as house parties, game nights, clubbing, bowling/minigolf/paintball socials … you name it!
  • Organise fund-raising events – I firmly believe we could leverage the recognition and relevance of our society within and beyond campus and use our events to raise funds for our society or for a certain charitable cause
  • Organise after public debates socials
  • Introduce new and old traditions – think initiation rites for new members, or other fun, debating/getting-to-know-each-other themed games we could incorporate into trainings and our socials
  • Introduce internal debating competitions with fun motions, or other fun debating games
  • Introduce mentoring program – this way experienced members could help new members with debating, adjusting to university life, and socialising
  • Speed-dating? - the possibilities are endless
  • Set up google forms to find out what you, the members, want more when it comes to our society's social life!
