Election post
Hi everyone, I’m Ami! I’ve been the interim treasurer of UCL Student Action for Refugees (STAR) since this summer and would love to continue my role as a treasurer for 2022/23.
As an interim treasurer, I worked with the president of the society to organise all of the events that took place in the last couple of months, including a welcome talk, pub social, #FillTheSkiesWithHope campaign action, film screening, and fundraising bake sale. I believe that we have managed to rebuild our society and established a stronger relationship with STAR’s national team. When I get elected, I will ensure that our society will remain an active group of the STAR national network.
I am keen on making meaningful contributions to the lives of refugees, who are undeniably among the most vulnerable members of society. As a treasurer, I hope to be more involved in a cause I am truly and genuinely passionate about. The last few months allowed me to gain experience in managing all the finance-related tasks and learn how the Students’ Union and STAR operate, so I believe I have the required understanding and skills to continue my position in this society.
The recent introduction of inhumane policies in the UK has exacerbated the vulnerabilities of refugees. Therefore, I believe it is essential to continue organising volunteering opportunities, fundraising events, and campaign actions (e.g. Fight the #AntiRefugeeLaws, #LiftTheBan, #CommunitiesNotCamps). I will also work with committee members to organise panel discussions and speaker events
