Sign Language Society: Vice-President

Hello everyone! It is so lovely to meet you. My name is Batool and I’m studying Arts and Sciences. 

When I mentioned to my flatmates that I do Sign Language classes every week they gave me a confused expression. I don’t blame them, without coming to sign language society (by coincidence, my friend had convinced me to come for one social!) I might have given someone the same confused facial expression. But since starting Sign Language society I have been opened to this new world of communication. It offers me insights and creates empathy and awareness of the challenges a hearing-impaired person may face on a daily basis. We have wonderful events already: the weekly BSL classes, ASL tasters, regular socials and deaf awareness sessions. I want to be part of Sign Language Society’s idea-making, event organisation and just generally helping out.

My aims as Vice President: 

• Organise some casual social meet-ups before a language class so that we can revise the previous week’s content. 
• Be a person that you can talk to! You can come to me anytime to discuss ideas, concerns or if you want to try having a short conversation in sign language :)
• Raise more awareness of deafness and sign language. 
• Expand volunteering opportunities and place society members in a position where we introduce sign language to the public.

I'm aware that I'm a new face to Sign Language society but I would appreciate if you could take a second out to vote for me!
