The Welcome One-Offs are taking place during the Welcome Period between 19 September and 2 October 2022

What are the Welcome One-Offs?

Students' Union UCL Volunteering Service is promoting several one-off opportunities during the Welcome Period for students to try out volunteering!

One-off volunteering events take up a day or half a day, with no longer term commitment.

These events are also aimed specifically to UCL students, so you'll be volunteering in a group of 10-15 UCL students on the day! It's a great way to make friends across departments and academic years.

Overall, the Welcome One-Offs are a perfect way to meet and network with volunteering organisations and like-minded students, explore what it's like to volunteer in London and improve your skills!

As with all of the volunteering we offer, taking part won't cost you a penny and you can claim back your travel expenses within London.

What one-off opportunities are offered?

Opportunities you can choose from include event organisation for an afternoon tea with senior people or creating sustainable eco-pads!

You can find the opportunities below. Keep in mind some have different registration processes, so always read the information provided!

Keep checking back to see more opportunities like this advertised!

Green Shoots Foundation is a UK registered charity with projects in SE Asia, particularly Cambodia, where we operate a rural development community space to introduce sustainable livelihood options such as nature-friendly agriculture, social business and environmental stewardship.

Our project GreenFlow intends to develop a natural, biodegradable sanitary pad using water hyacinth and other natural materials- this prototype will then be used as a tool for menstrual health education in Cambodia during May 2023. In June 2022 we created our initial prototype and our aim for this one-off volunteering opportunity is to help build on the same prototype, but focus more on functionality, safety and disposal.

We have organised this one-off volunteering opportunity to help us with research and development in relation to the project. This will include Fundraising opportunities, materials research and improving on the our Life Cycle Assessment methodology.

For more information and to apply visit our opportunities webpage.

One Housing is organising a one-off volunteering opportunity specifically aimed at UCL students. They need 10 volunteers to support an afternoon tea event at their older peoples' service in Protheroe House, Haringey. They need support to organise the day, serve the tea, sit with our customers and enjoy the event (including enjoying some afternoon tea yourself!), and helping to clear up.

They are particularly looking for anyone who can play music and sing during the event.

It is going to be great fun and you will have the chance to meet older people with great stories to tell!

Share Community is working with UCL to offer a one-day volunteering opportunity where UCL students can join us and work with our service users to take part in a Masterchef Challenge!

UCL Student Volunteers will be paired with our service users to work in teams of two and compete for the ‘Share & UCL MasterChef trophy’!

Volunteers will get a chance to take part in a fun and interactive team challenge: in pairs you will be given a set of ingredients and a recipe to follow, and you'll need to work as a team with our service user to replicate the recipe in the time allowed. All Volunteers and service users will then have a chance to try their food and have it judged by Share staff.

Would you like to know more about the work that goes on behind the scenes to keep a Palace in central London running?

Fulham Palace is working with UCL to offer a one-day volunteering opportunity where UCL students have the chance to work alongside the collections and conservation manager, and the head gardener.

The day will be split into two sections and groups of 5 will also swap around with two hours for either gardening/collections in the morning and another two hours in the afternoon after lunch.

Cody Dock is working with UCL to offer a one-day volunteering opportunity where UCL students can join us and make soap and paper from recycled materials and plants that we have gathered from around our very own gardens!

We will show you what each plant is and where you might be able to find it.

The soap and paper we produce will be sold at our winter ‘Frost Fair’ to raise funds for our volunteer programmes here at Cody Dock.

As part of the Welcome Period, Age Uk Kensington and Chelsea is organising a one-off volunteering opportunity only for UCL students!

In remembrance of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's reign and great service to our country, we are hosting a tea party at St Cuthbert's Church in partnership with Opera Holland Park. It will be an afternoon of reflection and memories.

They need your help in organising a tea party to celebrate the start of the term. They would love your help to make it as enjoyable as possible for the guests!

Your time and participation will be greatly valued and appreciated!

UCL students will become Conservation Volunteers for the day with Heath Hands, helping conserve and protect one of London’s most important and biodiverse green spaces.

You’ll work alongside our Rangers on a range of practical conservation and habitat management tasks – helping conserve our precious wildlife and threatened habitats. Volunteers will also get the chance to explore and learn about Golders Hill Park, the Hill Garden and Pergola and the importance of these sites for London. Volunteers will take part in some practical tasks related to nature and wildlife conservation – including habitat management, litter picking and light gardening.
