Active Bystander Impact Report 2023-2024
This impact report reflects on the key developments and outcomes of the Active Bystander Programme across the 2023–24 academic year, highlighting progress in workshop delivery, student learning, and programme quality.
Between September 2023 and March 2024, over 350 workshops were booked by departments, with 4,306 students completing the online module and 3,211 attending a live workshop. Student feedback remained consistently high across both components of the programme. Participants reported a stronger understanding of unacceptable behaviours, increased confidence in applying the 5Ds of Active Bystander intervention, and valued the clarity, relevance, and practical nature of the training.
Peer‑to‑peer facilitation continues to be a defining strength, fostering engagement and creating safe spaces for open discussion. The findings demonstrate a programme that is responsive, evidence‑based, and central to building a respectful and inclusive university community.
Our analysis of this feedback has found that:
- 99.5% of comments about the online module were positive.
- 94% of students rated their Workshop Leader 4/5 or above for in‑person workshops.
- Students are more likely to find in-person workshops more useful than online workshops (p<.001).
- 88% of students agreed they felt more prepared to intervene after attending the live workshop.
- 89% of comments related to workshop leaders were positive.
- 411 comments reflected specifically on feeling more empowered to act as active bystanders after the workshop.
"I found it more refreshing that it was a peer space and quite collaborative but also educational."
