Ugne Balciunaite

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?
Hi! I’m Ugne. I am a PT Masters student in Physics and Astronomy. Women at UCL deserve a real, breathing and active community! Thus, as Women’s Officer I will:

-Lobby for regular and free defense classes for women on campus
-Network with equality-focused organizations, charities and campaigns, creating volunteering opportunities for students as well visibility for specific services that may not exist in UCL
-Work with SSW to ensure visibility and better access to the services that are available
-Ensure University’s commitment to safety on campus and unwavering support for victims

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?
I believe that the wonderful and hard-working women at UCL can and must organize to see that we have the best experience during our time here! I will have a strong presence on campus and bring my big ears, so that I can best advocate for you. I will communicate closely with members of SU and UCL staff to see that women's needs are represented at all levels. I will employ my powers of persuasion to bring inspiring and diverse women to speak at UCL. I aspire to utilize whatever negativity I've faced as a woman and lesbian to better listen, encourage, and ensure we create our own opportunity!

Anything else?
There’s more I didn’t have space to mention, such as my goal to stock ALL bathrooms with sanitary products. I will dedicate time to the fine details, and ultimately, I want to get women excited about actively improving our well-being, achieving our goals and forming a community we can rely on!

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?
I am currently at the first stage of the Steinem quote: “the truth will set you free, but first it will p*ss you off."
Within my studies, my historical focus is on 20th century women's issues. I am also extremely enthusiastic about feminist literature, ranging from the classics of de Beauvoir, Freidan, Steinem etc. to more modern texts, such as those by Evaristo and Ngozi Adichie.
I know that my passion for all things Women, along with previous leadership experience, will allow me to fully support all women at UCL, while making it a safer, more fulfilling, and more equal place to study.

Anything else?
I will also dedicate my time to listening to YOUR concerns and implementing the changes that YOU ask for. This includes extra support for women with disabilities, mental health concerns, body dysphoria or dysmorphia, anyone transitioning, or anyone else who needs their voices amplified!
