Name of Event: Bookmark Reading’s Innovation Workshop

Volunteer Role:

Would you like to become a researcher for an evening to develop Bookmark’s new resources?

If you are passionate about reading, are interested in the mechanisms of early learning or simply love to give feedback, this session is for you.

Research by The National Literacy Trust shows that ‘play’ can lay the foundation for literacy skills, so over the summer we have been working on the Bookmark Box, an eclectic mix of activities and games, aimed at helping early readers in Y1-3 find enjoyment in literacy.

Bookmark Reading is on a mission to help children build the reading skills they need to succeed in school and beyond. More than 1 in 4 children will leave primary school this year unable to read well.  We have designed these resources to help children expand their imagination, as well as their vocabulary, and will be delivering a box to each of our partner schools for our volunteers to use during their reading support sessions.

We are looking for UCL students to participate in this development workshop and offer some honest feedback to ensure that children, volunteers and teachers get the most out of working with Bookmark. You will also have the chance to test our volunteer app and other parts of the Bookmark programme.

During the evening you can drop in to different ‘test’ workshops, get involved in interactive learning sessions and learn about the importance of reading for pleasure and early literacy from our programme of speakers. There will be time to chat with other participants over refreshments and find out more about Bookmark’s one-to-one reading support volunteer programme at this unique, one-off event.
