This skills session is designed and delivered by Up Skill 4 Life. Established in 2009, Up Skill 4 Life drives a step change in people through the design and delivery of tailored, relevant and engaging training workshops. All of their workshops are underpinned by the core belief of never using slides.

Learning outcomes for this session will include: 

  • Understanding the volunteer lifecycle & the implications of each stage
  • Why do students volunteer? Exploring the features & benefits of volunteering
  • Recognising the barriers to participation & the solutions to overcome them
  • Motivating your volunteers – ‘one-size’ will never fit all
  • 1st impressions count – effectively recruiting & inducting your volunteers
  • Mastering the art of delegation & feedback
  • Identifying the challenges to volunteer retention at different points in the year
  • Volunteer succession planning, how to continually develop your volunteers

This session will be delivered by Bakita Kasadha. Bakita is a writer, personal development trainer and HIV campaigner. She particularly focuses on capacity building within the third sector/civil society and ethical engagement of volunteers and advocates. She has been running skills workshops at UCL since 2015. She is currently studying a masters in Anthropology and Community Development at Goldsmiths.
