Consider Mr M who has Parkinsonโ€™s disease and is being treated with a drug that has the side effect of inducing compulsive behaviour. The medication helps with his symptoms of Parkinsonโ€™s, but Mr M has now gambled all of his life savings away and is living on the streets. How would you identify Mr M now? Is he the patient with Parkinsonโ€™s, or the homeless gambler? Dr. Foster currently carries out research and teaches Medical Law and Ethics at the University of Oxford. Among his countless achievements is the Ig Nobel Prize in Biology for his book ๐ต๐‘’๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐‘Ž ๐ต๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘ ๐‘ก.

As a barrister, he has been involved in various significant medical cases, including the assisted suicide litigation in the House of Lords (๐‘ƒ๐‘ข๐‘Ÿ๐‘‘๐‘ฆ ๐‘ฃ ๐ท๐‘ƒ๐‘ƒ [2009]), the Supreme Court (๐‘๐‘–๐‘๐‘˜๐‘™๐‘–๐‘›๐‘ ๐‘œ๐‘› ๐‘ฃ ๐‘€๐‘–๐‘›๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ ๐‘œ๐‘“ ๐ฝ๐‘ข๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘๐‘’ [2014]) and the Supreme Court endorsement of the withdrawal of life-sustaining nutrition and hydration from patients in prolonged disorders of consciousness (๐ด๐‘› ๐‘๐ป๐‘† ๐‘‡๐‘Ÿ๐‘ข๐‘ ๐‘ก ๐‘ฃ ๐‘Œ [2018]). Recently, he has also instructed in ๐‘€๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘’๐‘Ÿ ๐‘ฃ ๐ต๐‘’๐‘™๐‘”๐‘–๐‘ข๐‘š [2019], a challenge in the European Court of Human Rights to the operation of Belgian euthanasia law.

Although his work covers many fields, including Evolutionary Biology, Anthropology, Philosophy, and Law, his current academic interest focuses on the relevance of identity and personhood in decision-making. His work has been featured in numerous publications, including National Geographic and the Journal of Medical Ethics.
