Welcome to Calsoc cocktail night! Don’t be intimidated by the length of our cocktail list or possible costs. The point is to have fun, so get as many or as few as you like, and a lot of drinks have common overlaps so you’ll be able to enjoy different types without breaking the bank. If you can’t see your favourite drink on the list but still want to learn about scotch and cocktails more generally feel free to go off-piste with your own creations! We do not expect you to get through all 9, but you can die trying.

Here’s the list!

Equipment:

Classic bar stuff is best, a shaker cup will make mixing more thorough and allow drinks to get colder. Similarly, a strainer will prevent both large and small pieces of ice going into your drinks. These aren’t necessary if you don’t have them though, a jug with a big spoon for stirring and holding back ice with said spoon will do just fine.

A proper shot measure would again be the best for our uses, but any way of accurately measuring small quantities of liquid will suffice.

Use whatever glasses you have, I will go over the ‘correct’ glasses for each drink but at the end of the day the drink is what matters most.

Notes:

With all juices, long life is fine but fresh is better. If you squeeze your own lemon juice you can also garnish cocktails with the zest (which we will go over at the start).

Do not be put off by egg whites – they don’t contribute much to flavour but make drinks richer, more velvety and create distinct foaminess. Like with juice, pasteurised will do but fresh is better, the alcohol neutralises any risk of illness. We’re hosting after dinner so you may want to cook with yolks and save the whites – carbonara or egg fried rice would be delicious.

To make 500ml of sugar syrup, just boil 300ml water with 300g sugar until completely dissolved. Adjust quantities as desired.

You will need ice for all your drinks, make sure you’re very well stocked.
