Alice White is back with a new series of ask an expert classes this term! This two week course / pair of classes will specialise on how to capture elemental qualities in oil paint. 

Painting the Elements Part 1: Fire, Smoke and Heat

Please bring in ONE PRINTED/PHOTOGRAPH IMAGE OF FIRE OR HEAT for this class. Your tutor will have reference images available. ((N.B: Images on iPhones/smartphones are not recommended, as your phone could get damaged by paint))

YOU WILL:

  • Learn to use warm colours to create the effect of heat in landscapes/objects/skies
  • Experiment with gradient colours and bright hues
  • Use gestural/expressive marks to create ‘fire’ effects
  • Use brushes and palette knives
  • Experiment with paint and charcoal to create ‘cloud’ and ‘smoke’ effects
  • Learn painting secrets of Old Masters and Contemporary Artists

Painting the Elements Part 2: Water and Storms

Please bring in ONE PRINTED/PHOTOGRAPH IMAGE OF WATER OR STORMS for this class. Your tutor will have reference images available. ((N.B: Images on iPhones/smartphones are not recommended, as your phone could get damaged by paint))

YOU WILL:

  • Learn to use cold colours to create different water effects
  • Study the textures of still water, moving water, waves and foam
  • Use brushes and palette knives
  • Learn to use linseed oil for ‘shine’ effects
  • Experiment with paint and charcoal to create  ‘fog’ effects
  • Learn painting secrets of Old Masters and Contemporary Artists

All materials are provided, although you are always welcome to bring your own. As always we would like to remind you to follow student union guidance including regular lateral flow testing, adhering to mask policies and self isolating when appropriate. You may want to bring a bottle of water with you as you can get very dehydrated when painting.
