About the organisation

National Trust - Sutton House

Sutton House is a sixteenth century house, preserved by the National Trust for its architectural and historic importance. One of the main functions of the property is to promote and facilitate community education.

Do you have a passion for history and a love of sharing stories with others’ Does the idea of bringing 500 years of history to life sound like your sort of pastime? In that case, come and explore a rare piece of Hackney heritage - join us and become one of Sutton House’s tour guide volunteers.

Role Aim:

Bring the history of Hackney’s oldest house alive for members of the public.

Tour guiding is an exciting role, providing you with the opportunity to meet a variety of people and inspire them about the past.

You will also gain valuable and transferable skills, such as confidence, public speaking and working in a heritage environment, all of which could help you if you wish to go on to work in the ever-competitive heritage sector.

Once you feel secure in your knowledge of the house, you are free to design your tour in line with your own historical interests and present it to groups of up to 25 people at a time.

Skills needed:

- Passionate and interested in the past

- friendly

- outgoing and enjoy talking to people.

- A good storyteller

Training involves attending a ‘teaching tour’ where one of our experienced tour guides will take you on a tour of the house, explaining its history and giving you an outline of the content for a tour.

You will then be given our ‘tour guide training pack’ to help you familiarise yourself with the house before being invited to lead your first tour. If you wish, you may shadow other tours before giving your own to help you feel confident.
