Virtually unchanged for 400 years, Ham House is internationally recognised for its collection of textiles, furniture and art which have remained in the house since the 17th century. Situated on the leafy banks of the Thames, it is surrounded by gardens that have been restored to reflect their original status

Do you have a passion for history?

Virtually unchanged for 400 years, Ham House is internationally recognised for its collection of textiles, furniture and art which have remained in the house since the 17th century.

Our Room guides share their passion by engaging with visitors about family stories, art and love making people feel at home.

You’ll be able to spend time within the beautiful setting of Ham and be able to make friends through a big volunteering team. Your volunteering will make a valued contribution to our heritage and you’ll learn key skills involved in running a visitor attraction.

Role Aim:

Our Room guides share their passion by engaging with visitors about family stories, art and interiors, and love making people feel at home. They know all the must-see spots, and help us to share the ways we’re looking after them.

Duties:

• Welcoming every visitor warmly.

• Helping visitors to discover more and thinking about the needs of all visitors, including disabled people and families.

• Encouraging families to enjoy the collection by engaging in any proposed house trails and/or activities.

• Developing a knowledge and understanding of life and interiors in the 17th Century.

• Promote all seasonal programming across the property.

• Showing visitors the safest routes out of the building in an emergency.

• Helping visitors understand why we need to take care of special places.

• Ensuring that visitors do not touch the collection or furnishings.

• Getting to know health and safety and evacuation procedures.

Skills needed:

• Full of enthusiasm, hoping to inspire visitors of all ages.

• Warm and approachable and someone who loves being around people – you’ll meet a lot each day!

• Interested in Ham – you don’t need to know the history of the universe, but as a room guide you’ll need to pick up lots of facts and figures.

• Comfortable working on your own.

We provide any necessary training and equipment to help you do this role well and safely. Training includes a volunteer induction and shadowing other volunteers.
