About the organisation

The Literacy Pirates

We believe that one to one attention is one of the most powerful educational tools in the world. With this kind of support, learning can be more adventurous and the results astounding. We aim to improve literacy and creativity among young people in our target area of Hackney, by bringing together committed and inspiring volunteers with our young pirates.

Application deadline:

Calling all volunteering enthusiasts!

We’re looking for a Student Ambassador to spread the word about our volunteering opportunities. We already have around 20 volunteers from UCL, but we want to increase our engagement as we create ships in both London and beyond!

You will play a key role in communicating with UCL students, whether it’s face to face, via social media, or even through presentations. You will channel The Literacy Pirates’ ethos of learning being an adventure, selling this in a way that attracts new students to begin their volunteering journey. Along the way, you’ll also develop your communication and marketing skills.

Role Aim:

The purpose of the role is to engage with students on campus telling them all about what we do at The Literacy Pirates.

We’re currently entering an exciting period of growth and we need to spread the word as much as possible so that we can continue our award-winning programme of one-to-one support to young people that are falling behind at school.

We’re looking for natural relationship builders that can engage with both students and staff in a variety of ways. This could include, for example, representing The Literacy Pirates at volunteering fairs or other events, writing about us in the student newspaper, or contacting departments to see if we could feature in their communications.

Skills needed:

Ideally, you would already volunteer as Literacy Support Volunteer (Crewmate) and are familiar with what we do. Alternatively, you could start this position alongside volunteering as a Crewmate.

You will meet with the Volunteering Team and be given an overview of the Volunteering and Education programme, and also guidance on how to perform outreach.

Campus based/remote, with occasional visits to our ships in Hackney and Haringey
Time commitment:
1-3 hours per week
Opening times:

Once you’ve registered interest in this volunteering role, we’ll send your name and UCL email address to the organisation for their records. You’ll also receive information about the next steps to take if you do wish to take things forward. The organisation has signed up to our code of standards, which includes a commitment to protecting your data. We won’t share your information with anyone unless you’ve given explicit consent to. We’ll also retain your details so we can follow up to see how you’re getting on with your volunteering and offer support if necessary. We take good care of your data – you can see full details here
