About the organisation

Single Homeless Project (SHP)

SHP is a London-wide charity working to prevent homelessness and help vulnerable and socially excluded people to transform their lives.

First established in 1975 by a group of homeless men, today we support some of London’s most vulnerable people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Our staff work with individuals to tackle the underlying causes of homelessness, such as poor mental health, family breakdown or drug and alcohol dependency. From supporting people in crisis to helping them take the final steps towards independence and employment, we make a difference to more than 8,000 lives every year.

Application deadline:
Friday, 17 May 2019

SHP’s Bucket Collections are a really fun, flexible and easy way to volunteer to help raise vital funds for homelessness services across London.

As part of a team of likeminded volunteers you meet new people, learn about the state of homelessness and gain skills in public fundraising.

Role Aim:

This year SHP is planning a fundraising appeal to coincide with mental health awareness week. Unfortunately, homelessness and mental health conditions often go hand in hand; 47% of the people we support have a mental health diagnosis and many more have slipped through the gaps. Currently, many of our clients struggle to access mental health services as there is limited support available for individuals suffering from complex needs (substance addiction & mental ill health) – we want to change this, by providing psychology and psychotherapy services within our hostels.

Station collections provide an opportunity for SHP to raise much needed funds whilst raising awareness about homelessness and our work across London. They are also a great opportunity for team building/group volunteering.

How will I make a difference?

By volunteering at one station for 2 hours you could help raise over £500. This could help deliver employability training to 150 homeless and vulnerable Londoners, helping them to take the final steps to independence and a fulfilling life.

What will I be doing?

You will collect as part of a team of between 2 and 8, including an SHP Team Leader. You are welcome to volunteer for as many or as few volunteer shifts as you like, all we ask is that you:

 Are a strong team player

 Are a confident public speaker

 Are enthusiastic and passionate about helping to prevent homelessness

 Are patient and friendly

 Are punctual

 Commit to watching a 10 minute training video

Through bucket collections you will gain:

 Experience in public fundraising

 Satisfaction from knowing you have helped to support people experiencing homelessness in London

 Increased understanding about homelessness and the charity sector.

 The opportunity to build confidence.

We’ll make sure that you have everything you need on the day – from buckets or contactless donation machines to our bold t-shirts and fancy dress. Just arrive ready to help us raise money to fund our vital services across London.
