About the organisation

Ramblers

The Ramblers is the largest walking rights organisation in Great Britain and aims to represent the interests of walkers (or Ramblers). We are a charity with 123,000 members.

The Ramblers have 5 charitable objectives:

1. To promote walking.

2. To safeguard paths.

3. To increase access for walkers.

4. To protect the countryside.

5. To educate the public.

The Ramblers as a charitable organisation believes that walking can have a positive impact on people’s lives, and that rambling in the countryside is a right and benefits the whole of British society.

This role will be a great opportunity to learn media and PR skills for the UK’s leading walking charity.

The Ramblers helps everyone, everywhere, enjoy walking and protects the places we all love to walk. We are the only charity dedicated to looking after paths and green spaces, leading walks, opening-up new places to explore and encouraging everyone to get outside and discover how walking boosts your health and your happiness.

Although London may not seem like an obvious location for walkers, there are over 12,000 Ramblers members living here, with about 4,500 of them in Inner London.

Role Aim:

London has a host of media, both local and London-wide, including Time Out and The Standard, BBC Radio London, Capital and local radio stations. Ramblers and walking are not widely featured in any of this media at the moment.

The purpose of this volunteer role is to try and place walking and Ramblers content in some of these publications/ on some of these programmes – be it news items about walking festivals such as the Ramblers’ annual Festival of Winter Walks, people-focused stories about the benefits of walking to health / mental health, pieces about the great places to walk London has to offer, or engaging in the debate around improving the lot of pedestrians through the letters’ pages.

Other Ramblers volunteers will be on hand to support you with news, expertise and ideas from the 25 groups across London and campaigning activity. The London Press and radio volunteer will have the autonomy and flexibility to pursue what interests them about walking and Ramblers in London.

Duties:

• Place walking and Ramblers content in some of these publications/ on some of these programmes.

• Target news items about walking festivals such as the Ramblers’ annual Festival of Winter Walks.

• Target people-focused stories about the benefits of walking for health / mental health.

• Collect pieces about the great places to walk London has to offer.

• Engaging in the debate around improving the lot of pedestrians through the letters’ pages.

Skills needed:

Enthusiasm and support for Ramblers values.
