About the organisation

Age UK Camden

Age UK Camden aims to promote the well-being of all older people in the London borough of Camden and to help make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience.

We provide a wide range of services and projects that aim to support people in later life, including those that are the most vulnerable and isolated.

Application deadline:

Help promote independence and connect older people to their community!

As a Community Connector, you will work with older people to find new activities that they would like to take part in. By doing so, you will help combat isolation and loneliness and bring stimulation, enjoyment and company back into older people’s lives.

This role is key to Age UK Camden’s aim to bring community, empowerment and friendship to older people in Camden.

Role Aim:

• Older people can lose their connections with friends and their community. They can stop doing the things they enjoy, including the hobbies and activities that keep their mind and body active.

• In this role, you’ll work with an older person to help them identify what activities they would like to do, you’ll research these activities with our support and accompany the older person to help them settle in. You might go with your older person to ballroom dancing, play indoor bowls, join a knit and natter social group – whatever they’d like to try.

• Once the connections have been made we’ll match you with another older person so you’ll have the opportunity to support someone else in their journey to independence.

Duties:

• Meet with an older person and get to know them over a couple of months

• Go with them to activities for the first time to help them settle in, build their confidence and encourage them to join in with other participants.

• With the help of our team, you’ll:

• Help them to identify what they’d like to do that they don’t do anymore

• Find new things that they’d like to try

• Look into opportunities that available for them

• Present them with ideas and options

Skills needed:

• We’re looking for people who:

• Can relate to older people and their lives

• Enjoy conversation and getting to know people

• Can gently encourage and help foster self-confidence

• Are supportive and sensitive

• Understand that it’s best for people to make their own choices and decisions

• Understand that the best outcome is for older people to feel confident to engage in activities without support
