Solace Women's Aid

Solace Women’s Aid is an independent charity providing a comprehensive range of services for women and children affected by domestic and sexual violence.

We are looking for befriending volunteers to provide one-to-one support to women who have experienced sexual exploitation either through trafficking or prostitution. The role will involve accompanying and supporting women to various types of appointments and making necessary referrals. The ideal candidate must have good listening skills, excellent personal & professional boundaries and be comfortable to work independently.

Role Aim: 

Provide one-to-one support to female survivors of domestic/sexual abuse

Duties: 

We are looking for befriending volunteers to provide one-to-one support to women who have experienced sexual exploitation either through trafficking or prostitution.

A Befriender is someone who has awareness of supporting women who have either experienced domestic and/or sexual violence. After attending induction training they will be expected to work independently but with support from the Outreach Worker to:

• Provide one-to-one support to female survivors of domestic/sexual abuse

This will include:

• Listening

• Support with linking into internal activities at Solace Women’s Aid and activities with external organisations or in the local community

• Accompanying and supporting women to appointments, e.g., attending the GP, Hospital, Court or Job Centre appointments

• Help in setting personal goals or objectives and working towards achieving them

Skills needed: 

- Experience of working with vulnerable women who have either experienced domestic, sexual violence or have other support needs

- Excellent personal and professional boundaries

- Feel that they are in a position (emotionally/psychologically) to support others (Please note this will be deemed by the woman herself but final decision will be down to the ( Lambeth Service Manager )

- Good listening skills

- Non-judgmental

- Resilient

- Keen to support survivors and help empower them

- Be willing to learn

- Be comfortable working on your own independently

- Be able to communicate well with others

- To have an understanding and awareness of the issues faced by the women accessing Solace Women’s Aid’s services

Training: 

Volunteers will be able to access Solace Women’s Aid’s induction and internal volunteer training programme. Full support will be given to help volunteers understand and carry out any aspect of the role as appropriate.
