Amendment to Governing Document AGD1115 Change to UCLU Byelaws – A ffiliations Proposer: James Skuse Seconder: Neil Chowdhury Passed: Union Council, 29 May 2012 This Union Notes: 1. The Byelaws currently say: “7. UCLU may affiliate to any external organisation provided that such affiliations do not violate relevant law or the Memorandum and Articles or Bye- Laws of UCLU. All affiliations shall be posted on the website and approved at the Annual Members Meeting. 8. Any new affiliation to, or disaffiliation from, a political or other sectarian organisation shall require a majority vote on a motion put to a Members’ Meeting or Referendum. Affiliations shall continue indefinitely in the absence of a successful motion to disaffiliate.” 2. We affiliate to several bodies, these are publically accessible: http://beta.uclu.org/list-of- our-affiliations 3. The 1994 Education Act states: “(l)there should be procedures for the review of affiliations to external organisations under which— (i)the current list of affiliations is submitted for approval by members annually or more frequently This Union Believes: 1. The Byelaws currently clash with the above section of the Act. 2. This situation may be rectified simply. This Union Resolves: 1. 1. To amend the Byelaws to: “7. UCLU may affiliate to any external organisation provided that such affiliations do not violate relevant law or the Memorandum and Articles or Bye- Laws of UCLU. All affiliations shall be posted on the website and approved at the Annual Members Meeting or Council should this meeting not be quorate. 8. Any new affiliation to, or disaffiliation from, a political or other sectarian organisation shall require a majority vote on a motion put to a Members’ Meeting or Referendum. Current affiliations shall continue indefinitely subject to annual approval at a Members’ Meeting in line with the previous Byelaw.”
