Amendment to Governing Document AGD1113 Amendment to UCLU Byelaws: Liberation Groups Proposer: Rachel Eyre Seconder: Amy Evans Passed: Union Council, 20 March 2012 This Union Notes: 1. That there are four liberation groups; Women, LGBT, BME, and Disabled within UCLU and NUS. 2. That the Women’s Officer and the LGBT Officer are elected cross campus and the BME Officer and Disabled Officer are elected by the Equality forum. 3. That the LGBT Officer and Women’s Officer sit on UCLU Council and the BME Officer and Disability Officer do not. This Union Believes: 1. All liberation officers should be equal, and thus have an equal voice. 2. By have a cross campus election, with those who vote self-defining, will encourage more students to engage with the democratic process of electing their representative. 3. Further to Believes 2) it will raise the profile of their representative. This Union Resolves: 1. To add the appendix to the UCLU Byelaws 2. To elect these officers in the Autumn 2012 elections and then in the Spring elections thereafter. Appendix: Add to Section 4 – Union Council Composition 5. The composition of Union Council shall be: w. BME Students’ Officer x. Disabled Students’ Officer Add to Section 8 – Union Officers C- Non-Sabbatical Officers BME Students’ Officer The BME Students’ Officer shall: a. Self-define as black or minority ethnic b. Represent the interests of BME students within the Union and Equality Forum c. Work with the Welfare & International Officer and Equality Officer d. Coordinate campaigns related to issues affecting the BME community. e. Liaise with the NUS on BME issues. f. Attend the NUS Black Students’ Conference Disabled Students’ Officer The Disabled Students’ Officer shall: a. Self-define as disabled b. Represent the interests of disabled students within the Union and Equality Forum c. Work with the Welfare & International Officer and Equality Officer d. Coordinate campaigns related to issues affecting the disabled student community. e. Liaise with the NUS on disability issues. f. Attend the NUS Disabled Students’ Conference Section 9 – Elections Positions 10. The following positions shall be elected via sectional elections: h. BME Students’ Officer i.
