Campaign statement for ‘Yes’

The IPCC projects the planet will surpass the dangerous threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius greater than pre-industrial levels by the year 2030. We need to take action now. UCL has investments in the fossil fuel industry that it must divest. Lives are at stake. According to the World Health Organization, “between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expected to cause approximately 250,000 additional deaths per year, from malnutrition, malaria, diarrhea, and heat stress.” By 2100, annual costs of global flooding are projected to exceed US$10 trillion per year, assuming global temperatures are held at 1.5 degrees greater than pre-industrial levels. We are rapidly approaching that point. People all over the world will face combinations of extreme heat, extreme draught or extreme flooding, extreme famine, and extreme poverty. UCL divesting from the fossil fuel industry is simply the bare minimum of what the university should be doing. Please vote ‘Yes’ on UCL divesting from fossil fuels and ‘Yes’ on making UCL publicly reporting all of its investments.
