Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an ambitious and motivated Rowing Coach to lead our women’s rowing coaching programme, suitable for all levels of athlete, to further support the development of the many student rowers at University College London. You’ll work alongside the Lead Rowing Coach (Men) and the UCLBC student committee to sustain and develop our rowing coaching programme.

Purpose of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an ambitious and motivated Rowing Coach to lead our women’s rowing coaching programme, suitable for all levels of athlete, to further support the development of the many student rowers at University College London. You’ll work alongside the Lead Rowing Coach (Men) and the UCLBC student committee to sustain and develop our rowing coaching programme.

Weekend work and Wednesday afternoon work is a minimum requirement, with some flexibility around when the remaining contracted hours take place. This will be set in partnership with the student committee and authorised by the Line Manager.

The post holder is responsible for delivering the following:

Coaching

  • To lead the women’s coaching programme for UCL Boat Club
  • To work with the club committee to set squad and club performance & development objectives
  • To work to maximise the number of UCL students who compete in BUCS competitions
  • To support the casual/volunteer coaches in developing and delivering their rowing programmes ensuring that they are fully supported in their coaching activity
  • To work alongside the captains to select crews
  • To work with our Strength & Conditioning coach to provide an overarching training plan for each squad for the year
  • To attend various races & regattas as set out and agreed in an annual competition schedule.

Equipment

  • To maintain an accurate equipment inventory
  • To aid and advise the club committee on equipment procurement
  • To ensure equipment is adequately maintained
  • To teach basic boat and equipment maintenance to the student maintenance officer
  • To carry out basic boat repairs and advise when external repair work is required
  • To advise when an insurance claim for equipment damage may be appropriate

Health & Safety

  • To ensure that all Union and British Rowing safety standards and reporting procedures are adhered to
  • To ensure all squads/groups have the appropriate number of coaches and appropriate safety equipment available to them.
  • To assist the student committee in completing an annual risk assessment and ensure this is adhered to throughout the year
  • To ensure all coaches and coxes conduct activity in a safe manner, following NGB best practice and guidelines
  • To advise on exceptional river conditions
  • To complete the British Rowing Safety Audit and respond to incidents on behalf of the club

General Duties

  • To take a leading role in managing The Union’s relationship with the boathouse and ULBC
  • To establish positive relationships with relevant health and sports professionals and National Governing Body.
  • To actively follow and promote UCL Equal Opportunities and Diversity policies.
  • To maintain an awareness and observation of fire and Health and Safety Law and Regulations.
  • To commit to reducing The Union’s environmental impact and promote environmental and ethical good practice in line with Union policy.
  • To attend appropriate meetings as and when required by the Union.
  • To carry out any other duties commensurate with the grade and purpose of the post.
