Your Role

You will be a full time Sabbatical Officer of the Students’ Union working full time to provide leadership to the Students’ Union’s services; and representing the interests of students to UCL, including participating in UCL committees and regular meetings with senior staff.

You will lead on equity and inclusion work across the Union to ensure that UCL is truly inclusive and welcoming for all students and that all students are able to participate in the Union’s activities. You will work closely with, support and be accountable to the POC Students’, Disabled Students’, LBGQ+, Trans and Women’s Officers and Networks to help champion their work, ensuring that the networks are thriving, active, welcoming and democratic communities.

General Responsibilities

  1. Shall be collectively responsible for the strategic leadership of the Union.
  2. Shall work full-time and represent the interests of students to UCL, including participating in UCL committees and regular meetings with senior UCL staff.
  3. Shall meet regularly with the Chief Executive and Senior Management Team to discuss the strategy, operation, and management of the Union.
  4. Shall serve as Sabbatical Trustees on the Board of Trustees.
  5. Shall ensure the Union is ethical, environmental, and sustainable.
  6. Shall share the responsibilities of communicating with the Membership, keeping all Members informed about the work of the Sabbatical Officer Team and the Union’s services for Members.
  7. Shall be accountable to students and keep all students informed of their work on behalf of the Union’s members.
  8. Shall fulfil their roles as outlined in the role descriptions and to support, where appropriate, other student officers and representatives in the fulfilment of their roles.
  9. Shall act as the spokesperson for the Union.
  10. Act as ambassadors for the UCL student community
  11. Shall lead on the implementation of Union policies relevant to their role.

Individual Responsibilities

  1. Represent students to UCL on the following issues:
    1. BAME Awarding Gap.
    2. Equity and Inclusion.
    3. Student Support and Wellbeing.
  2. Represent students within the Union and contribute to Union strategy in the following areas:
    1. Equity, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion. 
    2. Supporting Student Communities and Networks – POC, Women’s, LGBT+ and Disabled Students.
    3. Educating Students about Equality and Inclusion Issues – e.g. Black History Month, Disability History Month, International Women’s Day, LGBT+ History Month.
  3. Shall ensure that the student officers provide for the specific representation of the collective voice and interests of the students that they represent. 
  4. Shall ensure they represent the views and interests of POC, Disabled, LGBQ+, Trans and Women students as directed by the respective Liberation Officers.
  5. Shall consider how these identities intersect and ensure this is taken into account in decision-making.

Time Required For Role

This is a full-time role over a 12.5 month period, from 1 July 2024 – 15 July 2025.

36.5 hours per week plus a range of additional events.

The role involves some evening and weekend work, and is based in London, UK.

Salary: £30,138 including 27 days holiday. Please note this will rise in line with the cost of living increase from summer 2024.

The role is supported by a full programme of training, development, and professional mentoring to help build all of the skills and knowledge required and to support longer-term career development.
